Hello all, first post for 'laptop noob'!

What do I have to do to get 5.1 audio out of the spdif?

My old set up was a PC with a phono socket for spdif.
I connected a bog standard phono lead from this to my DD amp into the coaxial input and VIOLA...5.1 audio no problem.

Using the same lead I put a 3.5mm mono jack to phono adaptor at the laptop end and nothing, no audio!

I'm obviously doing somethin wrong. I assume that the spdif is electrical as I normally associate optical with Toslink connectors and not old fashioned 3.5mm jack plugs?

Please don't tell me it's optical and I have to replace my current 15m phono cable (under the floorboards) with a (pricey) 15m optical cable, which is pointless anyway as i'm all out of optical inputs on my amp, only coaxial is available.

    Many Thanks
