After Acer's announcement regarding Gemstone Blue line for 18'' 8920 and 16'' 6920 I am very interesting of getting the 8920 but I have one major question that I cannot find answer to.

Both models listed to have Blu Ray drives more specifically the 8920 will have 2X Blu-Ray DVD DL SuperMulti and the 6920 will have 1X Blu-Ray DVD DL SuperMulti.

This Blu Ray drive is just Blu-Ray reader or its Blu Ray burner as well??

All the specs I saw just reffer BluRay drive as Blu-Ray DVD DL SuperMulti and does not specify if it is or not a burner.

    Any idea??

    hoggie you are the man!

I dont know how I missed this article.

So according to this it is Blu-Ray Burner(!) and for $1700 with top configuration sounds pretty amazing deal!

Do we know if those 320GB drives run at 7200rmp or they stay to 5400rpm and if they come with any RAID configuration??

The price will varies, for $1700 might not be the including the Blueray burner. There would be a few model for GemStone Blue, one might include just dvd burner, HD or blueray. It can be a few combination depend on the market need. I guess blueray burner will be the premium and not many will get it. Well Acer is unlike dell where we can customize so depending on luck if there would release a model with blueray included.

In all statemends Acer makes it more than clear that 8920G price will start from $900 with a basic configuration with up to $1700 to be the price for the top of the line configuration and that will include Blu Ray drive.

It sounds to good to be true I know, but that what they said even the official press release states that!

a HDD of that sizes has got to be 7200rpm or you would have all the right bit's for a fast laptop and the HDD would let it down.....don't think acer would be that stupid but then again we are talking about acer lol :D

PS. if you do get the Blue(lucky git) come back and write a review for us.

    all the best,
    Phil :D

I know right? But Acer spec sheet isn't going to technical at all so you can't really tell, for now:
    http://www.acer.com/gemstoneblue/eng/pdf/BR-gemstoneblue-UK.pdf

But even HP the worldwide leader in notebooks only offers 240GB@7200RPM, for its flagship notebook DV9700, the 320GB options runs at 5400RPM  :
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/cto.do

8920G notebook suppose to come out by the end of April and mid May.

So far looks impressive. I am looking to clarify 100% that will have Blu-Ray burner, HDD are running@ 7200RPM, if they offer RAID even better and comes with Vista Ultimate 64bit out of the box. If the above are included then I found what I was looking for for a while now for an amazing price!

And for sure I will make a review here as soon as I put my hands on it.

Only 320GB 7200RPM HDD currently available is a Fujitsu, and it's not released yet. It's supposed to be released for use in Fujitsu laptops in June.

So it will be a 5400.

Probably... If that's the case and since they don't let you customize it, I hope that they will offer an option with maximum configuration with 7200rpm HDD probably 240GB  .

I will prefer to get maximum configuration with 240GB HD@7200rpm than maximum configuration with 320GB HD@5400rpm

Good luck! Please let us know

There are no 240GB 7200 RPM hard drives either. The HP uses 2 x 120 GB 7200 RPM harddrives. You might get a 200 GB 7200RPM option I guess.

The 320 5400 RPM's speed is very similar to the 200 7200 RPM.

Yes that is what I mean. 2X120GB@7200rpm total 240GB.

    Why you say that?

Thanks dtwn83, thats definitely useful info!
To be honest I heart that before but never saw tests or any results.
So according to this 320GB@5400rmp is faster that 120GB@7200rpm cool :D

Something else, what is Acer's relationship with 64bit Windows operating systems?
Any change we will see the new Aspire 8920G coming with Vista Ultimate 64bit out of the box?

I would like to know if it will be a MXM graphics card fitted. What does disappoint me is the only the top model has the 9650 graphics and wait for this UK price $2800 £1400. But saying that a blue ray in a dell is £300 or $600 more in the UK. Manufactures call the UK treasure Island. I am trying to find one for sell in france or germany because they will be cheaper than the UK. When the wee came out france £110 UK £178. Big difference.

I am going to be asking some questions from a retailer today.

Acer do 3 year warranties but they go by screen size upto 17" and where can somebody get a carry bag for a 18.4" laptop.

Here is a link to site where you can see the gemblues being held and gives a idea if the 18.4" size. It doesn't look too big to me.

You can get a T9300 and T9500 but in the top model I have only seen the T9300 so far. The retsilers can request differenr spec on the machines but the consumer can't which is naff. You should be able to give your spec to the retailer and they order it from acer. The one I ordered I think the retailer has a check they are £12.95 for delivery but the laptop will come straight from acer and no doubt acer would of delivered to the retailer for free.

I am having second thoughts at the moment and I believe give it 6 months it will be available with most of the acer retailers and there will be discounts to be had and that will mean I will be able to get one of the higher spec mondel and hopefully the top spec. Might cancel the order until I have read what others think of the laptop. But another thing what comes to mind I am a member of a private investment club and last month it paid 14.44% and 150%compound interest a year. If I stick the laptop money in there for the year it will grown to £2600 and it will give me a free laptop.

Putting my thinking cap on today to decide what I will be doing.

    No I am not sure.

Actually there is a big confusion regarding the BluRay.
The official press only states SuperMulti BluRay/DVD+-RW with no further explanation and in the internet only a couple of websites are referring to it as BluRay burner...

    Time will tell I guess.

The question I have is what are the chances to getting this with Vista 64bit out of the box?? Anyone know?

i only saw vista premium in the shop in France

The link I posted above is the Test from the 01net they say it clearly that there is no blu ray burner, they even say that i would have been nice if they have put blu ray burner so it is sure there is no BR burnner on it
