Good Morning.
Last week I bought a small Aspire One 1.6 Ghtz Wind. XP with 1 gig ram and it is the slowest laptop I have ever owned.
I boot up and get on line, and then I have a 30 - 40 sec wait every single time I try to change screens.
The problem is not booting up, or even getting on line, but it takes too long to get from screen to screen once I am on line.
Before I throw this away, as I can not return it, please, what do I do with this $300 doorstop?
Thanks

install Linux, and upgrade the RAM to 2Gb. also, use Chrome or Firefox (as opposed to IE7 or 8) as browser.

Where did you buy it?

I had the very same problem until I discovered there’s a power saving option on the wireless adapter that is turned to maximum by default. To turn it off, right click my computer > properties > hardware tab > device manager… then find your wireless adapter in the list under Network Adapters, right click > properties > advanced tab. Select Power Save Mode from the list on the left and select Off from the drop down on the right. Press OK and close device manager.
Try this I'll bet it fixes your problem -
Do the power saving change for your wireless adapter also.
You cannot upgrade to 2GB, you can only put in another 1GB module and remove the 512MB so you are at 1.5GB max.
The issue is not with your browser nor your OS, so I don't understand why some are so fast to recommend you move to another OS and browser without even attempting to troubleshoot a little bit. -
Mine isnt slow at all ...Xp runs perfect with 1gb ram.... there is some problem with the ssd models but the hdd ones run great
-
I actually just got mine and am in the process of setting it up. I used CCleaner to disable a few startup processes and uninstalled a lot of unnecessary software and it seems to be running a little better than my Lenovo S10 that I had before. I recommend applying the power settings mentioned here and also trying to get rid of unnecessary junk on the system

Mine was never too slow.. I guess you could always upgrade the ram.

Uninstall Mcafree or nortron depend what one you laptop came with
and upgrade ram but i start with remove mcafree or nortron
mine came with mcafree
also upgrade ram help -
I added the ram upgrade to 1.5gb, plus added 4gb of ReadyBoost (plus a touchscreen, internal bluetooth, and an Intel AGN wireless card)
I think someone either has, or is very close to a 2gb hack (the post was mostly in Spanish, but included screen shots of an Aspire One running XP showing 2gb ram).
In short, if "LittleBit" can run three operating systems at the same time ( all while running a SlingBox session), you should have no problem surfing a few web pages. Something else must be wrong.
FWIW, the slowest laptop I ever owned was a Toshiba Tx1000(?). It had a 1.44 floppy, and perhaps as much as 640k of memory.

I did the power change. Goofball says: make sure your hdd is not in PIO mode. What are hdd and PIO and how do I change them?
Also, would visiting gaming sites, MySpace, Utube, and recording guitar music and videos cause a brand new computer to freeze and run very slowly?
Thanks. -
PIO mode = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmed_input/output
You need to go to the "Device Manager" - rightclick on My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manager. Extend "Disk Drives", select your drive then rightclick on it and select "Properties". Check the tabs, you're looking for "Policies" or "Advanced" tab. Somewhere there will be DMA/PIO option to select.. -
Do you have the 8gb SSD version?
If so, this hard drive is total crap for write times, I installed XP for a friend who owns an Acer Aspire One 8gb SSD and it took hours.
Getting the drivers installed also took an age and even clicking on the start button took a good 10 seconds sometimes to register the click.
Woeful performance, best to buy a cheap standard 2.5" 80gb drive and use that. -
We have the 160gb version, running with 1gb of RAM and XP Home. We bought an external CD/DVD drive, and the software for it took hours to load. It took so long that I thought it was stuck, so I stopped it, and restarted it, which, of course, took even longer. It seems generally to run slower than my Dell Inspiron E1505.

For Whizzo, or others familiar with gaming: My son used our new Aspire One for a week and played internet games as well as recording his own guitar/ drum/vocal music and making videos with the installed web cam. As the week progressed, the mini laptop froze and became extremely slow, and now will not do a system restore. Do you know what impact gaming websites and heavy audio/video used on the Aspire One does to the operating speed? We are running the McAfee antivirus that came on the machine. Thanks.

Ditto here. My AAO 160GB is fast. -
Have you tried running CCleaner, SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware?
Some gaming sites have been known to harbor trojans, etc. -
My wife's AAO 160GB run's perfectly - only hitch was dropping WiFi that a change in settings took care of - other than that runs great !!

How's the doorstop Lenore?
Have you checked the settings on the wireless card?
Were you seeking assistance or just blowing off steam? -
