The machine seems to have a really really bad microphone, is there any way I can fix this?

if its just too quiet i'd recommend playing around with the pickup settings. If it sounds bad, get a good headset; I use a razer blackshark, sound quality is great, its really comfortable, and relatively inexpensive if you get refurbished.

Laptop mics are a pain to use, I'd recommend a headset even if yours worked okay, they are too close to the keyboard and pick up fan noise + typing.
