I'm not a novice but I'm definitely not an expert and usually have no problem upgrading the memory or hard drive in a laptop, but I just bought this one, and I don't see how to upgrade either component! I had to take the entire top of the laptop off to get to the motherboard and other inside components. The hard drive has a cable connector over the top of the hard drive and I'm afraid to remove it in case I need to return this laptop. I also can't find the RAM anywhere.

There's no information about this laptop (is it new or unpopular?) and certainly not how to upgrade components.

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the picture... interesting, is that a connector for an optical drive I see? I'm assuming you had to remove the bottom cover to access the RAM, yes? Could you run this freeware utility to identity the manufacturer and model number of the LCD panel?

It comes with an AUO11EC panel.

I have one of these laptops (already swapped over my SSD and an extra 8g ram in it) and I can tell you that although the majoroity of the casing is plastic this thing is SOLID. I mean, really, really solid. I cent induce it flex anywhere, no creaks, and even the screen lit is pretty stuff.

As for the screen, Its actually pretty decent. It didn't need a lot of gamma and colour correction to get it dialled in. Contrast is good, brightness is good, and the backlight is pretty even.

The speakers are not awful, a lil sharp on the high freq, but better than most laptop speakers. Good volume too.

Performance wise, with my SSD and 16gb of ram, its pretty damn quick. Graphics performance with the 840m in it is actually very acceptable. Im achieving around 55-60 constant FPS in the MMOs I play, except for the most populated areas, on maximum possible settings.

Oh, and the WiFi / Bluetooth is a Dual Band Atheros chipset, AR5B22

Its a great lil laptop for the price!

I'm glad you were able to answer his question. I only had the laptop for 1 wk before I returned it for the Asus X550L that had the same exact specs but with an optical drive (which I still like) for $60 less ($629) than I paid for the Acer ($689). It was a very nice computer but I did think it too flimsy although it was light. Even my fingernails left dents in the plastic!

That is strange, as that is not the experience with it I have had.

It feels miles better built than my last two laptops, a 2013 HP Envy 15.6 and a 2012 Asus. My colleague thinks my acer feels better build than her Lenovo.

Mine came with an optical drive...?

I thought it was supposed to so when I got it, I checked the description on Newegg, where I purchased it, and it didn't come with one.

Very nice laptop though. I really liked it. It was very fast and the graphics card was pretty good too. I'd definitely recommend it

Thanks for the reply. This looks like the hardware identifier from Windows' Device Manager. Unfortunately, it is not enough to identify what the panel model # is (it only tells me it's made by AU Optronics) Google doesn't turn up any useful information, either. Did you try the utility I posted here? -- EnTech Taiwan | Utilities | Monitor Asset Manager

The reason I'd like to know is because I'd like to see if I can replace it with a higher quality wider gamut matte panel, but without knowing the model number, I won't be able to deduce the exact specs for a compatible replacement (dimensions, connector placement/type,etc) once I look up the model number on a site like http://www.panelook.com/

How did you go about prying off the top without damaging anything? I removed all the screws on the bottom of the laptop but the top doesn't want to budge in the slightest.

The reason I'm asking is because I'm having issues with the built-in Atheros Wi-Fi adapter, which likes to cut out and drop my connection every 5-10 minutes for no reason whatsoever; I have to manually disconnect and reconnect to my network for it to work again for 5-10 minutes. And it only seems to drop when I'm downloading things or playing online games. I read on numerous forums that some people have had luck in fixing this by disconnecting the auxiliary antenna from the adapter, or by replacing it entirely with a different brand (Intel seems to be a common choice), but I can't really do either of those unless I can get the top of the laptop off lol

I really don't want to have to return this to Newegg, since other than the wifi issue it has exactly what I was looking for in a laptop for school.

Edit: I've tried reinstalling drivers, installing old versions of drivers, allowing Windows to install its own generic driver, and it doesn't change anything.

Edit 2: Managed to pop the top of it off (the clips in the back near the hinge were what stumped me) and disconnect the auxiliary antenna, which not only failed to fix the problem, but wifi doesn't even work at all if the auxiliary antenna isn't attached to the adapter. I dunno how other people got this to work for them but I'm not gonna keep messing with it and might end up buying a new wifi chip. But does anyone else have the issues with their wifi dropping? Seems to be a common problem with Acer laptops with Atheros wifi adapters.

What wifi cards is it exactly and what driver version you have?
Also make sure that power saving is disabled for Wi-Fi card (device manager, card, advanced settings)

the Atheros chip is an acer version of the AR5B22 which is a dual band chip. Ive had no wifi problems whatsoever with mine, using WiFi driver 10.0.0.288 and Bluetooth 8.0.1.242

But I am running my own install of Win8.1 in my SSD that I swapped in, not sure if any of the acer junkware that comes with the default install will be interfering with it.

I actually prefer the Atheros card to my intel 7260 in this laptop, get superb signal with no 2.4ghz signal shenanigans that I get with the intel (known issues). Right now im using my routers 5ghz network without issues about 20m away from it, and I have no issues with any of the 4 2.4ghz networks in my workplace either.

Check Station-Drivers - News for the latest Atheros drivers and try those

Believe me, I've tried multiple driver versions (the latest one from Acer's website, two older ones, the generic Microsoft one) and tried all sorts of power option toggles. Nothing works.

As it is, I've ordered an Intel wireless card from Amazon that should be here tomorrow.

(btw, I also made the connection earlier today that my desktop was also plagued with similar dropped connection issues when I first got it... turns out it has the same exact adapter model in it. You'd think they'd realize that these things simply don't work after thousands of people are complaining about them on various forums...)

I'm also using my own install of Windows 8.1 Pro, so there's no junkware at all on it.

I know everyones experience is different given the many possible combinations of software / hardware both laptop and router side out there, but ive never had any issues with my Atheros kit. Intel has given me issues at home on 2.4ghz and a ralink card in my HP doesn't like one of my work networks.

What modules you have installed? My v3-572g does not see more than 8GB. I tried 8 + 4, but in the BIOS visible only 8.

I bought another of the exact same modules that was already present in the slots. Its a Kingston part, PC3-12800, 8gb, 2R

    part number is ACR16D3LS1KFG/8G

It worked right off the bat, no bios changes required!

I didn't mention, when I fitted my 2nd memory module, I had to persuade (bend) the retaining spring lever things a bit to get the module to properly latch in and stay in. Maybe yours is the same and its not staying inserted properly

Found that laptop only works with low voltage 1.35v memory. Marked as DDR3 L or PC3 L-12800. Kingston part number KVR16 LS11/8, and an ordinary 1.5v without L - KVR16S11/8.

    Hi guys,
I've just purchased this new laptop and I would like to upgrade the ram to 16gb and swap the hard drive with a 500gb ssd (probably a Samsung 840).
Where is located exactly the ram? On the back side or under the keyboard.
I mean, it's enough to open the back panel only to change the HD and add the ram or not?
    Thanks,
    Nicola

To open the laptop, you need to unscrew all 18 screws back of the case and remove the front panel along with the keyboard. The front panel is removed entirely. Under it three wires, be careful. Memory is under the motherboard, after removing the front panel, you need to unscrew the motherboard.
Replace the memory in this laptop is not so easy.

    Thank you very much!
So at the end is in the most common position in a laptop, if they only put a simple removable small cover in the back panel..
And what about the hard drive? I suppose it should be enough to unscrew all the screws in the back and remove the front panel, right?

    ok, understood.
Last thing, do you suggest the ram upgrade? I mean, I'm currently testing my new machine and sure, the upgrade to a SSD drive will definitely worth the money. But what about the ram upgrade? Probably 8gb for me it's fine but adding a second module will switch on the dual channel mode and speed up the system?
    What do you suggest?

Depends on your goals. Enabling dual channel mode is not highly significantly improve performance by about 5-10%. But in heavy graphics/video/audio editors a lot of memory will come in handy.
Do not forget that this laptop uses a low-voltage memory DDR3L.
In my laptop I replaced the DVD drive to the second HDD. 128GB SSD installed for the operating system, and 1TB HDD for data.

    Nice!
I'm using the pc for normal activities like office, internet + lightroom for editing raw images from my reflex camera.
Did u use any adapter to add the ssd in the dvd bay? A standard ssd is ok or an ultrathin model is required?
Sorry to bother you with so many question but I've made several search thru the web and this post seems to b the only one for this kind of informations! ;-)
If you have any other suggestions that could help me my ears are wide open!

For this laptop need 9.5mm model. Look on ebay with "SATA to SATA 2nd HDD Caddy 9.5mm". During the installation you have to be careful and not to break the mounting trim panels.
    619sSeVIKGL._SX425_.jpg
SSD is required to replace the old disk, otherwise the system will not boot. Laptop will only boot from the internal drive. From the disc in the adapter it will not boot.

SSD instead of the old hard drive, the hard drive instead of the DVD drive. DVD drive just put in a box. The last time I take in hands disks is 3-4 years ago.
But you can make a portable dvd drive by buying such a thing - External USB Case Enclosure for Laptop 9 5mm SATA CD DVD Burner Optical Drive | eBay

    Hi guys,

The 14" version (V3-472G) of this model is on the way to me, and like others my first thing to do will be poppin my SSD in, and put the HDD in a ODD caddy. Also thinking about maxing the RAM, but thats a bit expensive now.

Could somebody tell me if the ODD is connected thru SATAII or SATAIII? possibly some speed benchmarks?
Also I could not find any information about the chipset being used in the laptop. Is it the HM86, or the newer HM87, an anybody check this for me?

And last, maybe somebody could check what features are available of the CPU to mangle with Throttlestop?

This model has no ODD, the CPU is new and support will be added to Throttlestop at a latter date, I think.

I really appreciate the intend to help, but Your information is all wrong. The model has ODD, and TS7b2 already supports intel Haswell.

I'm very interested in the chipset type, bc if it has native RAID support (the HM86 does not, the 87 has), and the ODD is SATAIII, i'll be definately try a striped RAID with 2 SSD-s

Yes, I agree but Haswell covers a veriety of CPUs and please read post 2190 from here http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...t-upgrades/531329-throttlestop-guide-219.html
I couldn't find the information regarding ODD, Acer says no ODD in this model:

No offense, but please bear in mind that not everybody on the internet is dilettant.

I never asked a question like "Is there an ODD ...". The question i've asked is the connector type of the ODD. Besides, that question is regarding the modell this thread is about (V3-572G), the model I've ordered also has ODD and if i was not 100% sure about this i haven't confirm on this the 2nd time. And if You'd took a closer look at the model You've linked, that also can be configured with ODD because the slot is visible.

The same regarding TS. I did not ask a question "Does TS support this CPU...." because besides it is off topic here, i know it does support. That question is also regarding the modell this thread is about (V3-572G) , and i'd like to hear some experiences because there are at least 2 guys in this thread who could possibly post some screenshots , and logs.

    Thanks!

These news are very very good. It uses the Intel Lynx Point LP chipset, which shoud have RAID support but i'm not sure for now, have to do some research.

As i can see, the card reader is connected via PCI-E. That means, it's possibly not capped at 20mb/s R/W speeds,

    Very good news :)

EDIT: Indeed, Lynx Point-LP has native RAID support. That means there is possibility to have some crazy disk I/O rates :D

So, 572g guys could anybody check whats up regarding RAID in the bios?
And how about other Lynx point LP chipset laptops with RAID support? I'm not well aware of the current models, but AFAIK the LP chipset has 3xSATA 6gb/s interface, and there is native RAID support. Worst case scenario is it's disabled in the bios...

Bought this on 05SEP14. I can help fill in some blanks.

    1. Theres no way to get it to boot raid or off the ODD/DVD HDD. I had trouble getting it to even recognize at first, took me a good 2 hrs. still not sure why it wouldn't recognize; but it's working now.

    2. As you can see from the shots below, even in legacy mode it does not allow AHCI to be changed to IDE or RAID. so no, the one I have no raid.

    3. With that said, the model I have (3698) is apparently a special Hong Kong edition for the computer expo, so no you won't find it online or be able to buy it elsewhere. I paid $500 USD tax in (well no tax here) for it.

Is that an open mSATA slot I see in the first set of pictures? Just switched from a Lenovo Y500 to this, and I'd love to put my 240GB mSATA drive in here.

Thanks for the detailed help. My V3-472G has arrived on monday, and the bios has the same, ultra barebone setup options. But as I can see, Your machines bios version is 1.07. I've already updated it to the most recent (few days) by Acer, if You are familiar with the process, and error possibilities of a bios update, your machine would definately benefit from it (new nVidia vbios)

I have the 14" sibling of this machine (V3-472G), and it does not have mSata port. On the picture, I think what You think is an mSata is the keyboard ribbon cable. Most likely the whole mobo is the same in both the 14 and 15" model. Here is a picture of the underside of my models mobo

So I've got an Asus x450 replaced to a V3-472G. Mixed feelings currently, I think I will write a "mini-review" after a few more days of usage, because I was unable to find anything before buying. I've replaced the HDD to a Samsung 840 ( about 20% performance loss in W8), and waiting for the ODD-HDD bay (7$ from eBay). The good news is the optical drive is fixed with only 1 screw, so it can be replaced without opening the case. That is not true for the RAM, and HDD as OP already described. I've made some detailed photos of the mobo, and also replaced the thermal paste on both CPU and GPU, and was shocked of the quality of the factory pasting (what to expect for a 500$ laptop anyway). But that is not everything, the surface of the heatsink was very messy with a mysterious, sticky goo what was not easy to remove, and the quality of the surface is also awful. I've made some pictures, wich I will share in the appropriate topic (maybe this). Temps are amazing, (for me) 34C idle, max 53C after 30min stressing with TSBench and Intel XTU.

Also having big trouble with this whole UEFI, and various OS-es (W7, W8, Linux) wich I did not have with the Asus (also UEFI), and still experimenting with it. Now i have a 11s boot with W8, and UEFI mode.

Since these series of Acer laptops are basically the same (V3-X72/G), maybe a common users lounge would be enough?

You're right, Lakondas, that's the keyboard connector I'm looking at. I wondered why it was located in the middle of the board. mSata to Sata adapter and the optical drive caddy are on the way from Amazon now.

Is there a trick to getting the case to come free at the hinges? I removed all the screws and tried to remove the case while looking for an mSata slot (before I found this thread), but I couldn't get it to release near the hinges.

Ive folded the laptop, and removed all screws. With a little plastic tool, went around the edges, and exactly the hinge part did not dissasemble, until I applied quite lot of pressure. I think there is a technique to loosen those clamps, by lifting the front part first or something but i could not find out. Also, first You should lift the side that is opposite to the audio jack side, and i instinctly removed the bottom plastic from the case, (while the laptop was upside down) not like the pictures shared in this thread where the keyboard cover is lifted. I hope that helps a bit. EDIT: Checking the images again, I think it's possible that the 15" model could not be disassembled this way (removing the bottom part, not the keyboard part)

Also, maybe my struggling with OS are near the end. Windows 8 is terrible IMHO, and finally after quite hard trying i could install a clean W7, and dug up drivers for almost everything (except the Serial IO wich was visible in the device manager first, but disappeared from the unknown devices after installing some other driver) and i'm testing currently if everything works ok. I really don't want to OFF this topic because technically is about another model but i can share my driver finds if you send me a PM.

Also if any moderators read this, I think my experience with my model could be useful for others so i'm asking Your opinion: Should i open a separate V3-472G owners thread, or a combined V3-X72 owners thread, or just use this existing one (maybe renamed)?

14 and 15 inch mobo not the same. I will get a few good pics when I have a chance to redo the thermal paste, good idea btw.going to do some before and after loaded temp reads also.
