My questions are: what is the battery life, will there be SSD options, how many USB ports, when will it ship?
I am not familiar with Acer, is the build quality good? Thoughts on this laptop, is anyone else considering it?
-
Added it to my cart and it showed "in stock". Looks like it is ready to be purchased. As for the battery life...I haven't seen a computer yet with much of a battery life when using the 750M. Haswell will help but like you I'm curious how much.
Here is a short review I found: http://www.techradar.com/us/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-pcs/laptops-and-netbooks/acer-aspire-v7-review-1161958/review -
Would be nice if they were a bit more detailed with the specs. Also it says there are 4 color options, but none to choose from on the item page. Hopefully they update this soon because this looks very interesting. I am wondering why more people haven't discussed this laptop, has it flown under the radar? Seems like an ideal Haswell ultrabook at 14" that can game. Seems to be what a lot of people seem to be looking for.
-
It looks pretty much like a more expensive version of the M5 ultra line. I didn't hear anything good regarding the keyboard and the port placement is a bit unfortunate.
It might not be bad but MSI ge40 with similar specs and a better GPU goes for 100$ less. With the sheer amount of decent light gaming notebooks coming out it's hard to be appalled by this notebook. -
You're right it is in stock. I found out the HDD is 5400rpm which is disappointing. Are the V series generally user upgradable? Could I easily put an SSD in or probably not?
12GB of RAM, great audio, and the 750m is sufficient for me because I am not an extremely intense gamer. Very likely going to pull the trigger. Only other consideration is the P34G from Gigabyte but I don't want to wait when this is nearly as good and easily available.
Just curious Alex, are there any negatives with having ports on the back? Or is it just inconvenient? And what specifically was bad about the keyboard? Is that Acer is general, or this model? Is Acer build quality for the V series well regarded?
If I find out battery life is somewhat respectable on this, it might be the laptop to go for. -
How did you guys add it to the cart? I can't see a button or link or anything. Also did anyone actually check it out (buy it)? Was there a shipping estimate?
-
Sold out now. I actually might just wait for the Lenovo U430 instead of this. Seems to be fairly similar and what I'm looking for.
-
I bought the V7 it is a great ultrabook i have the i5 haswell with Nvidia 720m it is quitte fast, only thing i need to do is exchange the HDD wich is slow with a Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB.
-
Where did you buy it from mafiatounes?
-
I just bought the aspire v7-482pg-9884. mine is the i7 version which is an online exclusive for north america. im not sure which is the i5 or which country. it arrived this morning and so far so good. i now noticed that it is no longer being offered through the store today. maybe i bought the last one or.... i got a call from acer telling me they have been getting reports of some issues with these machines, so maybe they are testing them before they sell anymore.
-
-
Acer said they sold out and are restocking the online i7 version. Have you tested the battery life yet? I'm in between this and the Lenovo U430. I just wish the i7 version came with a SSD and not the 1TB HDD. -
i did call acer again and they said the issue they were calling about was a noisy fan but mine has been silent typically then ran minecraft at max setting (skyrim as well) and it kicked on, wasnt loud to me.
any other questions and i will try to help. im happy, this this is beautiful. -
Have you tried gaming with it? I know technically speaking, the 4400 can't handle anything above low but since you have it, I figured I might was well ask.
-
Is the 750m ddr3 or ddr5?
Hows the temps on the laptop does it heat up a lot when you game for extended periods of time or even casual usage, browsing, streaming, video chat, etc?
Is the keyboard backlit?
Are the majority of ports being in the back a problem any, foreseeable issues?
Very curious about battery life on this. How long do you think it would last typing documents/browsing at medium brightness with Optimus enabled? -
A few questions for you, as I am also considering buying the laptop.
Does it overheat?
How's the trackpad? I've heard mixed reviews about it, for example when you click it, the mouse tends to jump around the screen
And can you also do a battery test? Open up a few programs like MS word and open up some youtube videos and leave it on and see how long it lasts. thanks! -
regular use the machine does not get hot at all. gaming it does get warm but not painfully hot. of course if you sit it on your lap and cover the air vents any computer will overheat.
mouse pad seems fine but i havent used it a lot becouse its touch screen and for gaming i use a mouse.
battery test will have to wait a day or two because im on vacation bit&%$es! joking, but yeah give me a day or 2. my assumption is the battery rocks, the system does a good job of shuting off programs and components when not in use.
ports on the back dont bother me at all, powers on the side as well as 1 usb on both side. -
Funny: 15.6"
Only has nvidia 720.... Barely faster than 4600 built in HasWell gtx. Wonder why? -
Would you happen to know or be able to measure exact dimensions and weight? I didn't see them on the Acer product page.
Can the HDD be easily swapped for an SSD and/or can an SSD be added in?
I too am curious about battery life. It's rated at 6hrs, I would hope it's accurate or even better. -
Battery: I have a few programs open, setting is on balanced performance- estimated battery life says 6 hours 21 minutes.
specs: Aspire V7 Specs & Latest News | Acer | The Verge this is all correct.
only addition is that it seems to have a 24gb cache SSD in the second drive bay where a disk drive would be(not externally accessible)
screen is a beautiful but glossy touch screen. picks up fingerprint easy but thats the nature of the beast. im sitting in my living room on a very sunny day and anything thats dark on my screen has a reflection but its bright enough where its not a problem. the screen is and can be very bright.
keyboard is back lit, almost tough rubber like feel same as the bottom of the machine. keyboard is great in my opinion.
i give this machine first impressions 9 out of 10
i love it
*update: battery now reads 8 hour 39 minutes remaining. -
-
yes.. there is a 24gb ssd which is cache. it only shows on the disk manager. im not an expert but i read a while back that likely the system uses this as a quick access file storage to increase speed. boot time is less than 15 seconds. its fast! dont let the lack of ssd storage be the deciding factor. you can always replace it when they become cheaper. read back and you will see i already talked about heat and fan noise.

Someone on reddit said the trackpad is bad. Is it? I would prefer to use the pad and buttons instead of a mouse and that could be a deal breaker for me
-
-
just to confirm. the graphics card is GDDR5 right?
-
-
hows the gaming performance? saw a review where it said it was performing very badly ( thought it might be throttling)
-
The USA version (15.6") is 720m vs 750m other territories
-
adobe suits are very fast and responsive. i haveent rendered hd video yet but as soon as i have a project, ill give it a go.
folks also my perspective is coming from someone who upgraded from an i3 laptop with a gt 420m gpu. this is a pretty big leap up for me so... take it as it is. -
-
When open, could you also check what other extensibility points there are... Could the 24GB drive be in a mSata port? Any other mSata or mini PCI express ports? Is the RAM replaceable (and how many slots are there for RAM?).
Thanks in advance -
also reddit..type in search box on right side "aspire v7"...first link is user's review -
Either way, I wouldn't really expect a 750m to be able to push 1080p with anything more than low settings. That's one of the reasons Razer decided to go with their crappy 900p screen instead of a 1080p one. -
Thanks for the info and photos scher2jb. Great to see you got in so easily.
I'm a bit curious about the mismatched RAM sticks. I haven't kept up with the latest news, but isn't it unusual to mismatch the sizes in this way. Wouldn't it mess with making the most out of dual channel operation?
My other, crazy theory, was that it could be 2x8GB sticks working in dual channel mode, but that the GT 750m was using its 4GB as shared memory, taking us to the listed 12GB for this device. Could this be the case? Perhaps something to do with how Optimus works, that I know very little about. My reason for wondering this is because I thought 4GB was unusually high for a midrange graphics card. I've seen higher GTX 700-series cards that only have 2GB.
Now just to wait for it to be released in the UK.
Cheers -
My bad for my phrasing, it's more of a initial impressions/hands on. Looks like its the same person who posted on reddit:

I have the M5 from Acer which is also a thin gaming capable laptop. Problem is after a few months it started to heat up and throttle real bad while gaming. How's the V7 comparatively?
-
-
Why is the USA 15.6" model stuck with the 720m a and not 750m like 14"?
-
a customized Aspire V7-482PG 9884 with 8G ram, 256 SSD, plus the original 1T HDD (which can be used as an external hard drive) cost 46000 TWD, which is roughly $1550. It is certainly more expensive than MSI GE40, but for the full HD IPS display, it may be worth it. At the moment I think this is the only laptop under 5 pound with full HD IPS, Haswell and a 4G graphic card.

I have a question about the Cache ssd scher2jb. You posted photos of the inside of the notebook and said it's possible to replace the ssd. I see 1 or more screws arround the ssd. Is it true that it's only screwed on the notebook? Or can you see if it's glued or soldered too? You said the backside isn't glued at all, but maybe the ssd is? That would make it difficult to replace it.

FYI for those in Canada: there is a bit less powerful (but also cheaper & in-stock) version of this, the V7-482PG-6662

what you can say about the four build in speakers? i heard acer implemented a 8 watt sound system. how is the max. volume and the sound quality? (movies, games, music). German customers can order a V7 with an integrated SSD (256 GB 840 Pro, 299 Euro extra for example) but it's the 15,6" version:

Running utorrent under battery saving mode, with minimum brightness, the battery last about 5 and 1/2 hour from 100% to 10%.
