I think I am getting a new Acer 5672 WLMI x1600 notebook tomorrow for christmas and I was wondering about the backup dvd. What would I need to make it? Do I need a DVD-R or a DVD-RW? Or can I use CD-RWs?

To make a backup DVD, you need either a blank DVD+R/-R or RW disc.

I want to be able to get the 2 other cd keys from the backup. If I decide to not make a backup dvd will I still be able to get the extra cd keys from the d:/ partition?

First off the keys are not on your D: partition they are on the PQSERVICE (which is also the restore DVD)

And secondly you can not use those keys to restore windows and activate it without original windows xp oem software and integrated oembios / oemscan.ini files into the disk.

The key important part to this equation is the 2nd 1/2 of my statement. The keys that are found on Acer restore partitions are not standard keys, they are OEM VLK keys which are similar to VLK "640" keys found in cooperate installs. They all show the same PID in windows under the registered username, and activte and flag as not needing activation if you have the required files on the xp disk (which it does not have by default).

Without the required software / configuration you can not use those keys (and by default you probably should not either).

Thank you. I have heard that the notebook comes with a slew of software that slows it down, but I guess I will just have to deal with it.

The REST you need to google like I mentioned. If it is a core part of the operating system leave it, if it isn't needed disable it.

For example if you have no clue what "ehtray" is then lets go to google and check it out.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ehtray&btnG=Google+Search The second link down for lilutilities.com is the hit we are most often going to find, so use it.

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/ehtray/ And they say it is the following "a process is the tray bar process for the Microsoft Media Center. It gives you easy access to the digital media manager. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference."

Do you need / want that? Do you know what it is? Then lets go from there shall we?

I've done the first and told you a few that can for sure be disabled, your job now is to investigate the rest and go from there. Google is your friend ;) Make sure you use it accordingly mmkkay?
