My girlfriend has a 5810T that has trouble playing DVDs. It loads up just fine but at a random time (usually between 5-20 mins in) it starts freezing up and then stops altogether. Playing .flv or .avi seems to be fine and it only seems to be DVD playback. She says the issue has been there since she bought it so I don't think it is a driver conflict or such. I have gotten rid of the majority of the Acer Bloatware except for the ePower and ODD. The issue crops up in every media player I have tried.

Is this due to a faulty Optical Drive? I have tried everything I can think of with the exception of a clean install (which she wants to avoid). Any ideas will be most welcome. Specs are below:
    Vista Home Premium
    4GB RAM
    1.4 Core Solo
    Latest BIOS
