My dad has a TravelMate 5612WSMi.
    CPU: Intel Core Duo T2300E
    RAM: 512 DDR2
    OS: Win XP SP2

Recently the performance has been really bad. It takes over 9min to boot. When the startup sound plays - it jerky. Applications also take ages to load first time - but load quickly 2nd time round. Movies played in media player are also jerky.

This is what I have done to the laptop in a timeline:
    • 2nd (DATA) Partition removed and 1st extended and converted to NTFS.
    • All ET software uninstalled
    • IE 7 installed
At this point, the laptop was used for 2 months at this time, and the performance was as expected (good.)
    • Installed ET FrameworkV2.03.2015, and ePower Management V2.00.2016
    Bad performance began here.
    • Uninstalled all ET software again.

I thought that the problem might be hardware related so I got my dad to take the machine into our local support center (Rivonia, Sandton, South Africa.) This is what my dad said the technician said:
    • The problem is common.
    • The problem is cause by a conflict with the "Acer Empowering Technowlogy" software and a Internet Explorer update (or IE 7 install.)
    • The problem should be fixed by installing the new version of the ET Framework. If that fails we should us E-Recovery to return to original state.

But the new version is all ready installed, and using E-Recovery is not an option I want to use. I want to find what is wrong and fix it with out starting from scratch.

Does any one know how to fix this without formating the machine?

    Regards,

    Gary

I would recommend you upgrade the ram to at least a 1GB and defragged your HD

    Hey Gary

Good to hear someone from South Africa on the forum. Do this before you try anything else...

Email: [email protected] . He can and will sort you out. If he is unable to help he will find someone who can answer your sensible question(s) quickly. Don't waste his time though. He is a busy guy. And an asset to Acer support.

I did a defrag last night. No improvement. I don't think that installing more ram is a necessary. It was working fine before the new ET framework was installed.

Thanks for the email Theo. I'll keep searching for a while before I mail him though.

Yes! - I just did what is describe here, i.e. in Device Manager, I uninstalled the "Primary IDE Channel" and the "Secondary IDE Channel". After a reboot, windows reinstalls the drivers. After another reboot, the problem is fixed. Thanks for the help.
