Ok let me try to be fair,It's gonna be hard. That aside. I bought an acer 7741z for about 500.00 Granted it was a few years ago. However I had had reason to dis-asemble the laptop. When dis-asembling The brass nuts that the screws go into were inserted into a plastic case that is so brittle that while unscrewing the plastic holding the nuts broke before the loc-tite gave. Not good. On a different occasion the metal frame from the screen to the hinge broke, Surprisingly only 2 of the 3 nut recesses broke the other one remained intact but the nut came out. I know that this is not a top of the line laptop but it makes me wonder about the quality of manufacture Acer uses doesn't affect all models!
All in all (After 3 trips in with "Gorilla glue") I would caution anyone looking to buy an Acer. As a side note my use of this laptop has not been anything out of ordinary use(No rough treatment etc). Faced with 100.00+ for spare parts the epoxy was a no brainer. Just sayin!!

Your problems are isolated, there are many in this forums who have older Acers are quite satisfied even after many years of usage, I am not sure of the build quality of the newer models such as Timeline X ultra laptops, they look very cheap. Throw away laptops are here.

The newer Acer laptops, in my opinion have better build quality. As stated this is an isolated issue but I do understand your frustration. This could happen to any laptop overtime depending on use as well as a plethora of different other factors. Their not horrible laptops if your on a tight budget or have basic web browsing needs.

I had my Timeline 3820TG for two years and it was in "like-new" condition when I sold it a couple of months ago. I never had a problem with broken brackets or screws that would not release. I have no idea what made your plastic brittle like that but most Acers include quite a bit of plastic and most owners have no problem conducting regular maintenance.

I have to correct my earlier statement, I meant only the ultra laptops and not the earlier TimelineX series( my apologies to Bronsky and others those who have those models), however, I do believe that Acer makes quality products for the price we pay.

I had 12 Gericom, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Uniwill, Toshiba, Asus laptops in total over 11 years. Acer is the best value for money from my experience. But I had only high end and desktop replacement laptops. I disassembled almost all of my laptops. Some of them (Prestigio on Uniwill platform) I built from parts. My current Acer 8942g looks very well built (I disassembled it and put it back again).

I have a 4820TG TimelineX and carry it everywhere. Used it consistantly for around a year I guess.I really like the look of it and the case stands up to alot of the wear problems some laptops get when you rub your hands over the same part of the case daily and the paint rubs off for example.
I think they have come a long way as I had 2 Acer Aspires a few years ago and lots of broken case bits and pieces and the paint wear I mentioned. But to be fair, the hardware running has been great even on the old ones. I upgraded my 4820 from 4GB to 8GB Ram, from 640GB 540RPM to 750GB 720RPM and win7 32bit to Win7 Ultimate x64. It still has the i5-460M processor but I have ordered an i7-640M. It really flies. I work in edu in IT so I am around new laptops alot and I believe this runs as fast as any of the standard new ones. They are also quite good when it comes to warranty isssues compared to HP and Dell, thouggh it doesnt mean much as the next IT guy will give the same story but switch companies - depends on your contact.
I think they are well worth the money, if you buy a cheap one, they usually perform well, and the more $$$ ones are really nice.
In summary, yes the older ones (5+ years I am talking about) had pretty ordinary robustness.
Cheers,

I got an OG Timeline right when it came out and has been used and abused. To this day it still works just like the day I got it and it's now running W8 with no issues. I also only buy Acer monitors and have one that has been going strong for over 6 years. I think that unless you go for the super cheap stuff, Acer makes long lasting stuff. Can't wait for the 26th so I can go get a W700.
Bad review acer
