Ok guys, here's a nice challenge for you - what would be the best Acer to use as the basis for a laptop gaming machine?

Of course I mean what's the cheapest machine ;) that can have its cpu, graphics, hd, memory sensibly upgraded and it should probably start with a reasonable display?

Some ability to play Crysis would be nice as a best case gaming scenario target :D !

(all opinions welcome as I don't think there's a single right answer, lol)

So that'd be the 8920G right now.
Although I'd personally vouch for the 6920G having an MXM-II slot as being a good deal.
And let's not forget the 5930G that is due out before year-end.

I've got an upgrade plan already for my system once the price of Penryn silicon and SSDs go down: T83/93/9500, 4GB Kingston HyperX DDR2-667, 256+ GB SSD (ya right), GeForce 9600M GT (or whatever the best MXM-II GPU will be).

You can upgrade the 6920G with a Geforce 9600M GT ?

I hope so - the 5930G and 6935G both say that they'll be shipping with the 9600M GT, and I can't imagine that they would have something other than an MXM-II slot.

Yeah but where can I purchase a laptop graphic card alone?
I mean I'm not going to buy a laptop for the graphics card only hahah

Well, I would probably go for a laptop which has the MXM-slot functinonal with a cheap gpu, cpu, ram and HDD pre-installed, and upgrade it all to the max -- myself -- for cheap ;)

Cards are normally available on ebay, or you can buy a similar gpu manufactured for another notebook and reflash the VBIOS....
There are some cheap spare part dealers which normally offer the mxm cards for a premium....

Sorry I was probably not clear enough
what I meant was where would I get a graphics card seperatly, as in Im not going to buy a laptop, take ut the graphics card and do nothing with the rest :p

anyway, any specific places? Since I dont trust Ebay :p

I have a Acer 6920G, does it have the mxm thing?

Acerparts, Notebook Solutions....but parts bought from them will be costly.

Yes, the 6920 G, is Acer MXM compatible.
Which GPU did you get pre-installed..??
    9500M GS (MXM-II)..??

(But your laptop might be having a MXM-III slot since it is backward compatible with MXM-I/II, but not very sure because MXM-III slots are mostly present in 17"+ notebooks, mainly due to the High TDP of MXM-III GPUs)

Open up the laptop, remove the heat-sink and compare the mounting-holes on the MXM-board with the diagrams shown here.

I could've sworn the 9650M GS was an MXM-III card.

^^ My Bad, the 9650M GS is a MXM-III card. (Thx for the correction)
The 9650M is the successor of the 8700M, so it is MXM-III
The 9500M is the successor of the 8600M, so it is MXM-II

@OmarM, Sorry if I got you confused, the max GPU your notebook can support is the 9500M GS.

(I am still unaware of the fact, that the 6920G has a MXM-II slot or the MXM-III slot)

Probably an MXM-II slot due to the smaller size and lower TDP.
Still, if the 6930G/6935G has an 9600M GT in it, we could have an upgrade path later this year.

Thanks for the input, its clearly not a simple answer - as I suspected :) .

My brother has now assured me that he's not interested in 3D gaming performance, so assuming he's not offended by the size/appearance of a 5135 - that's what I'll very likely recommend he buys.

    Cheers and happy gaming
