I upgraded to 4 gb and the Bios was only showing 3gb/Vista 4gb.

I updated the BIOS via bootable DOS Fdd after reading things here and knowning that it was not possible via x64 Vista.

Update finished and notebook shutdown, not restart.

Now it will not turn on.
No lights with power adapter or battery.

I have tried the "crisis" disk method. holding fn+esc.
Tried power in and holding Insert.
I´ve tried with and with out battery/power adapter.
Opened and bridged the clear-cmos for 30 seconds.
    Reseated RAM and CPU.
Tried all of this with 1gb, 2gb 3gb and 4gb.

but alas she is still in a coma.......

I have tried Acer support for help but they want it sent to them, I want to avoid this if I can.

Can a failed BIOS really kill a notebook?
    Anyone have any other tips?

yup bios update is not to be done lightly, personally i would never update bios unless i needed features or was forced to.

    good luck,,

but if the BIOS is corrupted, it won't boot no matter what you remove...

if the FN+ESC thing doesn't start the bios recovery (you still wont see anything on the screen even if it is working) then you will most likely have to send the laptop to acer to be repaired under warranty

thats what BigO posted on the subject, and he is highly respected when it comes to all matters Bios related.
have you tried resetting the COMS.
there are two blobs of solider under the ram. if you bridge the two, this resets the coms.
whether this will help is a shot in the dark.
next time you flash the BIOS make sure you have nothing running on the laptop. browser, anti virus shut all unneeded stuff or the flash will fail.

PS search all bigOzone's posts on bios just in case i have missed something.

    best of luck
    Phil :D

if you mean this post --> forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=242740 or this one --> forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=284686 then I´ve tried all but I´ll try again during daylight.

I did the update via bootdisk as you cannot flash in x64 vista "yet"

I did try the clr cmos bridge, but i need to try again anyway , what is a good way to bridge?

with the crisis disk method, will it work with no lights, no fans, no video on the laptop?

i use a small wire bridge, but i would send it back or try acer support if its still under warranty.
if not under warranty then will have too see what i can find out for you.
will pm or email you if i find anything

It´s no longer under warrenty, but Idid contact Acer support who, as you may guess, were less than helpful, seein g as though I´m in brazil they just said "contact the service centre nearest to you" - another reason why sending it back is my last hope.

Does anyone have any links to Phoenix Bios failure solutions?

when trying the crisis disk do you have to at least have lights/L.E.D´s on?

I do know this but some things are worth trying and in one of the threads I posted is about Phoneix BIOS.

    Check this out.

Ok this method is a like BigO's method with some differences.
First - he claimed he fixed Phoenix BIOS by using this method.
Second - use a CD instead of USB Thumb Drive.
Third - use the BIOS version he originally had because the newest didn't work with this method.
I suggest you read the "guide" very carefully and try it out. Hope it works for you.

If you cannot find your original BIOS version I suggest you try them all, starting from the oldest version..

Did you have any success with recovering your Acer 5633 ?

i have the same problem, after flashing the bios (from a dos boot disk) the machine is totally dead..

i tried the Fn-Escape method (and other combinations i found for Phoenix Crisis recovery) but none seem to work... the machine is 2 years old and out of warranty now so i dont want to send it to acer.

    thanks

    Chris
