    Hi all

I thinking of getting the new blue gemstone 16" or 18" and I am looking at dell 1720 inspirion. The 18" acer is £1100 and the dell is £829 with 4 years on site warranty, I got a good discount.

The only thing what puts me off the acer is I have read their reliability is poor and build quilty is not good.

The acer for the spec and price is good with true HD screen 1920X1080P blue ray drive and HDMI output T8300. What did disappointment me only the £1300 model has the Nvidia 9650m GS graphics card, but the processor is T9300. It seems all the other models have a nvidia 9500m GS 512mb and is the 8600m GT replacement. Looking at the spec of the 9650m GS it looks like a 9500m GS overclocked and would be the replacement for 8700m GT.

Here is the acer gemstone blue. http://www.acer.com/gemstoneblue/eng/

How much does extended on site warrany for the acer cost and where can I buy it.

I really don't know whether to buy the dell or spend more on the acer.

Read the dell board and you will see the acer and the dell both have there problems.
it all comes down to what you need and what you are going to do with the laptop.
i have a 7112 which is nice but heavy to hump about.
but the blue is a leap forward and one hell of a good looking machine.
as for the warranty issues the best place for that would be the acer site.

    not much help
    Phil :D

I was told the Gemstone Blue would be available at stores like Costco and Best Buy.

Costco actually has a free lifetime guarantee on its products (you may want to re-check this though as some sites have discontinued this deal on electronics due to consumer abuse)

And I believe Best Buy has product replacement or protection plans as well. (Along with it's Geek Squad for on-site repairs/troubleshooting)

I was trying to decide whether or not to go for a Gemstone as well. But ultimately, I couldn't trust an Acer to hold up for 4+ years (hard to say with these things though...Dell doesn't exactly have the best reputation for reliability either and I've had flawless experiences with them...maybe in the end, it's just luck of the draw?)

I would like to be in the US where I think the price of top 18.4" with 9650m GS is $1700 compared to the UK price of £1400. US price in pounds £850.

I just can't see how companies can justify what they charge in the UK compared to the US.

well to be fair, the us is going through a recession so we can't be expected to pay all that much for laptops ;)
