I was looking at some battery stuff and came upon http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2218
It's over 2 years old, but is tip 1 the best way to start off? If yes, is 5 or 7 hours better? After I unplug it, do I have to drain it right away or can I wait a few hours? Should I drain it completely or down to 10%? How do I know when it's down to 10% or if it's fully charged?
If not, what's the best way to start off? Thanks.

You should calibrate the battery every once In a while.
After the initial startup it should be charged to full and then fully discharged until laptop shuts down.
Dont believe in this stories of formatting the battery or charging it several times. Someone lives in nickel times whereas we use lithium batteries for a while. -

Its always advised to follow this procedure with a brand new battery too. -
