I just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5630 with the following specs :

    Intel Duo Core T5500
    1 GB DD2 Ram
    Nividia Geforce Go 7300 256MB
8X DVD Super Multi layer Drive
    160 GB SATA HDD
    Windows XP Media Center

Im experiencing a strange problem with this 3 week old brand new ACER. Sometimes it just reboots without any notice closing all apps running without notice as if somone pulled the power cord. And this is happening on A/C power. I hardly used it on its battery. Before XP comes up it goes through that hdd file checking reporting cross linked files and errors like "First allocation unit is not valid entry will be truncated" but all of them are fixed in the process. The reboot sometimes happens even after the laptop is swithced for the first 5 minutes.

From PC Wizard 2006 I got this information too because first I thought it might be overheating but its not !

    Processor Temp Core1 : 44deg c

    Processor Temp Core2 : 49deg c

    GPU Temp: 49deg c

    HDD Temp: 36deg c

This is all the software installed in it :

    Canon and HP printer drivers
Mcaffe Antivirus (removed the factory installed Norton 2006 )
    MS Office 2003
    Dreamweaver 8
    Printshop 11
    FireFox 2.0
    DVD shrink 3.2
    Nero 7

The problem is that this was bought from Canada by a friend which was there on holiday and over here in Malta, Acer does not exist so I cant take it to the dealer for warranty cover.

But i dont think its a major problem. Can someone help me figure out from what this thing is coming from ?

Check the Event Log. Is the system logging anything around the time the reboots occur?

From the event viewer in which colum should I look at for errors?

    Application
    Internet Explorer
    Media Center
    Security
    System

Because all i see in them is just the "i information" no particular errors .

Just scanned the system for viruses or trojans but nothing could be found.

Anyone else with an Acer had this same problem ?

Use the FREE Memtest 86+ to test your system memory.

    [ISO version]
    http://www.memtest.org/download/1.65/memtest86+-1.65.iso.zip
Download the .iso version, burn it to a CD, then boot with it and allow it to check your memory. You will notice if any errors show up.

    [Bootable USB Key version]

Spontaneous rebooting is usually due to:
    Bad components on the motherboard
    Bad memory (rarely though)
    Bad harddrive

I've even seen defective desktop sound card and modem cards cause the system to spontaneous reboot. Yes, I realize your computer is a laptop.

I will run the memtest later and get back with any results.

Im guessing that its an HDD problem. Today I was installing an Adobe Reader update and during the install the program found some files missing / or could not be read. At that moment the laptop halted for a second and it rebooted. Before XP came up it went into that disc check procedure which it goes through everytime it reboots automatically and the files mentioned where found and fixed.

Is there any type of program that can check my HDD for errors ?
