I came across this on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-BD-HD-Deco...in_0?hash=item5d25b04c55&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
It says it's for Dell but if it fits a regular mini pci-e slot you guys think it would work? For $35 I am extremely tempted to pull the trigger.
-
BTW the reason I also want to get this card is because there is a Flash update from adobe coming in early 2010 that will utilize the broadcom accelerator for flash HD.

Yeah its a device that has promise but until the firmware is out there and the flash is patched to use it, it wont do you any good.
So if you want to buy something now that you can not use for almost 6 months at best, and never in a worse case scenario then have at it. -

So your laptop right now cant handle 1080p mkv as is?
And its not just plug & play, you have to use the right codec/player combo for it to work.
The real target for this device is netbooks with the 1.6ghz single core atom. They cant play 1080p but they can handle 720p and thats a measly 1.6ghz atom. Even a 2ghz celeron can do 1080p MKV in a regular full fledged notebook.
Edit: lol just looked up the timeline sorry to see it only has a 1ghz cpu?? Well keep in mind you need a pci slot open for this I would confirm you have one before you get it, like I said this tech is very new and not just plug & play. It may not work the way you envision it working. -
The only thing my machine has trouble playing is 1080p mkv and Flash HD but the accelerator would take care of both things. Also MPC works with the the card. I already the ins and outs of my machine I am just concerned about the fact that it says it's for a Dell so drivers that are included what I am worried about.
BTW this wasn't a thread asking about the technology or how my laptop performs. It does everything I use it for except for those two things with ease and gets 9 hours on a charge. Show me a 13in laptop that can do it better for $550? -
it seems it's possible - http://www.slashgear.com/acer-netbook-gets-1080p-hd-upgrade-with-broadcom-bcm70012-mod-2750341/
and the tutorial - http://terracode.com/AcerAspireMod/AcerAspireMods_P1.html -
It should work then. Try to find if you need any drivers but it looks like you won't need them.
Which laptop do you have? Can you give us all the specs?
Most of them are fairly easy to open and also to find the second mini-pci slot. chilko, the site you found, is really impressive to be honest. -
they said this about the drivers
"In order to use the Broadcom BCM70012, we needed the driver. The driver packaged with the card I received was for a Dell laptop and may not install due a system check the installer does. I was able to download the HP mini 110 BCM70012 driver, which installed fine. The Broadcom card was recognized and device manager showed it as active. "
this is also interesting
"Broadcom is working with Adobe to put BCM70012 optimization in upcoming release of Adobe Flash Player (est first half, 2010)." -
My model is a 3810TZ (SU2700). I already have the bluetooth module on the way so I figured I would order the HD accelerator as well that way only have to open the machine once.
-
the broadcom card is nice, but it only accelerates VC1, AVC, and H.264. Good for bluray or bluray rips but not much else. No DIVX, XVID, etc.
I was playing a bluray rip of bolt 1080P with less that 5% cpu utilization, quite nice. -
Yeah I download a lot of anime that is mostly at 720p but sometimes there are ones that are 1080p so the HD accelerator would help. Plus the Flash HD support when it finally arrives will be very nice.
-
PS. Please test it with my infamous test clip. http://rapidshare.com/files/133938829/killa.sampla.x264.mkv
I believe it'll fail as this clip has higher profile level than this Broadcom does accelerate, but give it a shot. -
nope. no acceleration. Only H.264.
X.264 is not exactly the same. -
-
seems interesting... i don't watch many movies on my laptop though, but if it can accelerate flash, I'm all for it.
-
Hurray!
The Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator has arrived (Only 3 working days to reach me)
The physical, driver & software installation is a breeze!
Btw can someone point me to sample HD trailers to fully test whether this Broadcom BCM70012 is worth keeping?
Otherwise I may want to replace with a HSDPA card since there isnt another mini pci-e slot. -

I am unable to find the Vista 64 driver for Broadcom too. -
-
Just a quick update.
I tried these 1080p WMV clips:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx
CPU utilization never exceed 30%!
Without the Broadcom accelerator my 3810T can never play 1080P video clips. -

The seller ships real fast and package is nicely done.
Highly recommended ;-) -
Did someone try this tutorial to enable 4500mhd acceleration already?

Someone should really make a sticky about DXVA acceleration because it's about 100th time me or someone else must repeat the same thing:
http://nunnally.ahmygoddess.net/watching-h264-videos-using-dxva/
+ use the damn search or even check few pages back this forums.
People already done this with examples. Someone even wrote his own (but doubling above method) tutorial.
About link. I don't know chinese but if it's KMPlayer method, than it uses Media Player Classic Home Cinema codec so it's the same method as above. -
I didn't want to annoy anyone. I just asked myself why it is necessary to install an accelerator when the iGP already does the job. I've no clue about that stuff and I'm not interested either. I just stumbled upon that Chinese site and wanted to post it so that someone interested can have a look at it. I didn't know that a guide already existed because, as I said, I'm not interested in video acceleration and therefore haven't done any research.

I don't know practical Broadcom HC Accelerator capabilities but for today only Nvidia GPUs accelerate HD material with profile higher than HP (high profile) or MP (main profile) @L (level) 4.1 which is higher than bluray movies. ATI and Intel accelerate only up to BluRay movies profile&level
See Wiki -
this little card is designed for it.
• Multistandard high definition video decoding in the following
formats:
• H.264/AVC HP at L 4.1 1080i, 40 Mbps
• H.264/AVC HP at L 3.0 480i
• H.264/AVC HP at L 3.2 720p
• SMPTE VC-1 AP at L 3 1080i, 40 Mbps
• MPEG-2 MP at ML
• MPEG-2 MP at HL -
Some of x264 encodes from the Internet are incorrectly encoded with [email protected] and that's where NVidia shows it's superiority

Well I ordered the card last night from that ebay seller ym901s linked. I even got a shipping confirmation early this morning so I should have it in a couple of days. I will post install pics once I get it up and running.
-
here is a quick test I did. 1080p at under 5% on a T8300. Solid 24fps
-
I guess with a SU9400 and Ati 4330 this won't give a benefit right?
-
Hi. Will this help to play streaming flash videos at HQ smoothly- without the annoying jerkiness ? Thanks
-

I got my HD Accelerator today and will be posting pics of the install and it's performance tonight.

I am currently using the Arcsoft media player from HP but it has some pretty big audio issues. Some of my MKV files playback with NO audio and some of them play all of the audio playing at once. As an example I have a high bitrate 720p Matrix MKV and the Arcsoft player plays the normal audio, the directors comments and the critics comments all at the same time.
I have tried MPC but I cant get it to render over the Broadcom card.
Any help would be appreciated. -
the player is zoomplayer 6, free version. it will allow you to choose your decoder very easily.
the utility is out there on the interwebs, took a lot of searching but found it on a Chinese site. don't remember the link.
I have since pulled this decoder out and installed in an HP mini 1000, also with no problems and blueray acceleration. Also, I have an Hauppauge usb ATSC tuner, and using wintv7 this card will accelerate the HDTV stream. quite nice on a netbook. -
Have you got any HD MKV files to decode properly with the broadcom card? If so please explain your setting or point me to a place that can.
Thank you -
Hey guys! The new flash 10.1 beta is out, anyone willing to test it out with this card?? Thanks
-
tried it on a the netbook. it isn't working. I think newer drivers for the card are in order.
-
quoting Terracode:
The beta version of Adobe Flash 10.1 is out that supports 1080P content. You will need to install the newest version of the Broadcom Accelerator driver from HP (filename sp44958.exe). The older driver doesn't work quite well with the new Adobe flash 10.1. I played 1080P flash content from YouTube smoothly using the new driver. Amazing difference from the previous Flash version. -
thanks for the info, but haven't tried yet. Don't use the netbook as much anymore, but will try and update the thread.
hopefully those drivers will work with XP.... -
They should work in XP.
Would you be so kind to upload the installer for the Broadcom diagnostic Utility?
Thanks -
updated the drivers, working like a charm. youtube 1080p is smooth. also it now has a little systray app that shows when the card is active and inactive.
