Hi
My acer 5020 had cracked where the hinges are, so i ordered a new lid and fitted it. now when i turn it on nothing appears on the screen.
I'm 99% sure i didnt break anything, and have re-opened/unscrewed the lid a few times.
Just wondering if anyone can think i can try to get it working.
Have contacted Acer but the want £53 just to have a look at it.
If not, anyone have a guide/some info as to what i can take out and sell.
Thanks for any help given.![]()

The aspire 5020 right? Get rid of itwhile you still can: the hinges design is flawed, the cracks are just an external signs, basically the lcd brackets are flimsy and after a while they start bending around the place where they are screwed to the chassis exerting pressure on the plastic at the same time, and eventually the opening/closing weakens the bending point and they snap... If you replace them when that happens, they'll crack the lid and break again later... They should have been L-shaped and slighty thicker but I guess there are everywhere.
Check if you fully plugged the lcd cable . -
Sounds like you might have not inserted LCD cable in right or broke
a wire in it. Check your connections.

i'd recheck my work... and try to power it up w/o totally reassembleing it..
please tell me you removed the battery and the AC before doing any work!!
check your work and report back -
Thanks for the advice guys.
Will give it one more go and post how its goes.
Thanks again. -
Still not working, the laptop powers up, just nothing on the screen.
Have attached a pic of the cable that goes from the lcd to the laptop.Attached Files:

That cable seems to be fine, and securely fit.
Have you rechecked all connections.
Try booting with a single RAM module or inter-change them.
Also remove the wireless, lan and optical disc, and then boot.
Press the power button for 15 seconds, with the computer off, all sources of power removed, i.e. AC, battery, USB devices, and then boot.
Do you have the Service Guide for it ? -
Yep have re-checked all connection, all seem to be in securely.
Will try with one RAM module and post back results.
Not sure how to remove the lan, wifi and optical drive.
Nope don't have the service guide.
Thanks -
IT WORKS
Did as you said Andy, booting up with 1 RAM Module and holding power for 15 seconds then inserting AC adapter and it works.
Do you think the RAM module i took out is broken?
EDIT: Have re-inserted the other RAM module and the laptop is still working.
Have also left rep for everyone who helped. -
There you go Andy.
Good thinking on your part.
Rep for you buddy.
Cheers,

I do not give any rep .
If i do not get an explanation , of what this 15 Seconds trick did ..
Ok let me guess ... Bios loads defaults ? -
i must be slipping,, or have too much on my mind.... that is usually one of my first suggestions -
OP: Glad to hear, it worked out for you. (And thx for the reps guys)
@kiriakost: Yeah, it does load the BIOS defaults. It basically resets the CMOS, by discharging all the capacitance, flushing out all the power out of the motherboard (also from the CMOS battery), which -> causes the CMOS reset. Now CMOS is where the BIOS stores the date, time, and system configuration details it needs to start the computer, which are obviously restored to factory settings due to the reset.
Sometimes the power button trick isn't enough and one has to remove the CMOS battery manually, and leave the notebook without power for about 10 minutes and wait for all the capacitance and power to be depleted.
Anywayz, I never did a research on this, but I am pretty sure this is how it works and what it actually does, since I have done loads of cmos resets on my D630 when overclocking though the BIOS used to go wrong. -
I would expect , that Acer would had made an FN + something as Bios reset function , than this hammer - chisel methods .
Ok Andy , the beers are on my bill .
