did you try to uncheck the mute box in volume settings?

if not; double-click on volume icon(next to clock) and uncheck the mute box under 'microphone'..

Double Check that it is configured:

Start >> Control Panel >> Sounds and Audio Devices >> Audio (tab) >> Sound Recording.

What does the default device list?

I know you have already unmuted the microphone but try this:

Follow the same directions as the previous post to get you to the Audio tab where you were able to describe your Default Device. Now, click on "Volume...". This is the recording volumes panel. Under Microphone at the far right, make sure that the "Select" check box is selected (i.e. checked). I found that if the Microphone check box is deselected and either CD Audio or Line In is selected, the internal mic will not work as it will not be set as the audio recording device. Would be useful for an external microphone.

Let me know what the result is.
