Hey, I'm looking to buy a laptop tomorrow and there's been a few niggling questions that I can't find the answers to. I'm going to sell my existing laptop (Gateway trash), and my desktop computer to fund this.

I'm wondering about the price point and how it will compare to my desktop, since it will be replacing it. I'm also curious on the comparison between the 8600m GS and my x800xt. I'm mainly looking to play Oblivion, and older stuff that I know will work.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    5920 cost is $799.99 CDN

    5920 specs:

Cool, does it outshine the desktop?

    And, Stardust kicks ass. :)

    EDIT:
Also, I'm normally an AMD/ATI guy, so I'm not overly familiar with the Core 2 Duos or any of the GeForces.

Newegg doesn't ship to Canada. :(

Not to mention, I like the convenience of seeing it and purchasing it in person.

That $799.96 is a sale price that ends tomorrow, so that's why I'm doing my last little bit of research now.

    Thanks :)

it is a good model for the price dfinitely is, but try to get it with NV9500GS or NV8600GT with 512mb gddr2.

sadly though, acer uses slow gddr2 but it's still one of these best laptops under a ground.

in my opinion , it's got one of these best keyboards in laptop world.

Everyone that replied to this first post might want to look at the video on the comp he wants to buy. It is the gs. I have seen it cheaper at rat shak. I bought the same comp except it came with the 512m gt, wireless n, HD dvd and i think the comp you want to buy only comes with the 6 cell batt and got it for $900 cnd. But as far as a good quality comp, you will not regret it.

yeah, you are right it is a nice quality laptop, and I also agree he should consider spending a bit more for a 8600 GT or new 9500GS one.

You'll get Blu-Ray drive! and 250 GB HD.
As far as I know Acer puts in Aspire 5920G WD BEVS 250 and 320 GB hard disk models. I think you'll get WD2500BEVS-22UST0 which is very fast hard disk. :D

I know the GS sucks, but it's the only option and better than an integrated x31000.

Thank you all for your advice and help. :)

not really, you can get it with NV8600GT or NV9500GS in similar price range to yours.

    Acer 5920G 6a 2g 25mn is priced 820US and it's got T5750,2gb ,250gb hard disc, NV8600GT with 512mb gddr2 and Intel wireless 4965AGN.

I may buy it myself since I will have to return my HP8510p to my boss.

Yep, I just picked it up and that is indeed what it has.

Yeah, but buying locally is more convenient than online for me at the moment, not to mention the instant gratification that comes with it.

Wooo, I have to head out to work, so I didn't get much time to play with it. So far, despite Vista, I'm relatively impressed.

Does anybody know if there is a big difference between the 8600gt and the 9500gs. Also they must make a 9500gt right.

    8600GT GDDR3(about 4300 average 3Dmark 06) > 9500GS GDDR2(about 3800 average)> 8600GT GDDR2(about 3400 average).

and these GDDR2 version of both NVs come with 512mb of ram usually.

the GDDR 3 version usually is 256mb but there are a few exceptions like ASUS G1 series and G2 series they have 512mb GDDR3.

Yup, although it made me feel a little ill plunking that much cash down on the counter.

    Thanks. :)

Actually, so far this thing is almost perfect for me. I haven't put Oblivion on it yet, but I'm still looking into Vista. Things changed more than I realized, but it's fun being able to fool around with a new operating system.

The touchpad and the buttons suck.

And now after this screen, I realize how poor the one on my old Gateway was. Looks all yellow and blurry.

Question, how much of this Acer-installed bloat is actually useful?

My 8600m gt has 512m ram. If the above quote on the speed of the 9500gs is correct, I guess there in not a big difference. My 3dmark score with stock drivers is over 3500. I can't complain with that I guess.

5% IMHO,,, the Erecovery Managment is needed to make your quick-restore disks,,, Acer Arcade is just a bloated SKIN for MediaPlayer,, but removing it does remove the DVD decoding... not sure what effects will be w/ Blue Ray...
so you may wanna keep it...

but i'd make my recovery disks and my DRIVERS AND APPLICATION disk,,, then remove almost all of it... who needs an ACER TOUR?? and all the functions of the Empowering Tech are available thru the control pannel (just not all tied up i a pretty green bow) with the exception of the Erecovery function of making the initial reocvery and driver disks

and hose all those FREE_WARE games they include... what a waste,, my 8 y/o niece wouldn't even play w/ that crap

just my rant aginst bloat ware

    bigozone

BTW congrats on the new member of your household
