U can use it with "media remote controller".
CIR is not standard IR and can operate with only certain remotes.
Some info about remotes:

wo.. looks bulky. I have found a way to remote control my 5920G using my Nokia phone bluetooth.
-
Yea ... but that has limited functionality (I do the same with my SE w710i for presentations; it lacks only laser pointer
)

"certain models" means in this case all remote controlls for windows media center. Btw. on windows mobile smartphones you have also remote controll program (via bluetooth)

Does anyone know if Harmony 659 (or others) will work? looking to use laptop as a media center

I have a 5920g with an IR port, does anyone know where you can get the remote control for the media player that actually fits inside the pcmcia slot?
Im sure Ive seen one but i cant remember where. Im sure that the US models ship with them having seen some pics.
Any ideas people, loads of us guys want to get one..... -
Im sure there is one, it looks very much like this one.

i've seen them... even heard that they will work w/ some acers...
is that remote an INRA-RED or BLUTETOOTH?
if it uses IR signals to communicate you'd need a laptop that has an IR reciever/transmitter...
so before ordering anything like that.... check your PC SPECS... (call acer if you can't find any info yourself)....
if you find a bluetooth model definatley PM me... i would love to be able to have the functionality of a media center PC!!!
thanks,

Hi folks, I have a new Blue Gemstone 8920G and the remote control from my other laptop (HP Pavilion), the same as on the amazon site, doesn't work at all. am disappointed a bit
not even one button works. it's like the CIR is disabled, but it isn't.
Also some other rc from Hauppauge HVR900 tv tuner doesn't work at all. -
That pretty much answers that question for now then, wont be wasting my money till i find one that works.
Will keep on the trail to find one, anyone beats me, let me know..... -
