I have 2 Acer 5100 Laptops and 1 has the TL-50 and the other has a MK-36 processor. Can any tell me which is the better of the 2.
I am considering upgrading both to a faster processor! Both have a S1 socket AMD. Can anyone recommend on how to proceed.

TL-50 is better because its dual core. You should be able to upgrade to a TL-60 2.0ghz or TL-64 2.2ghz (90nm version). Not sure if there will be any issues with TL64-66-68 (65nm versions).

The TL-64 costs $220ish while the TL-60 (2.0ghz) costs $160ish. Both have 1mb of cache, which is double the amount on the TL-50.

Any socket S1 AMD processor will work in those aspire 5100s(90nm or the newer 65nm), just make sure you have the latest BIOS from acer and you will be fine.
As nyu3 said the turion X2s are dual core processors and are therefore better than the single core MK-xx series which are only single core.

Unlike motherboard makers, laptop makers _usually_ don't update BIOS to support new CPUs. That is why I am hesitant to recommend 65mm CPU.

Actually last year acer released a BIOS update that enabled support for the new 65nm turion X2 processors as well the athlon X2(TK-xx) series of processors. So in this case they did update the BIOS to support the newer CPUs. If one doesn't update the BIOS then the CPU won't be recognized correctly and the BIOS will report the wrong speed etc.

The 65nm processors will work as some newer versions of the 5100 series have 65nm in them and they still use the same BIOS as those that have the 90nm versions.

depends on your budget... a TL-64(2.2X2) would be ideal, but a TL-60(2.0X2) is great, and so would a TL-58(1.9X2)
