    Hi,

I just got a 6930G and am in the process of buying an "Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile 3.06GHz 6MB E8435 SLAQD Socket P CPU" as an upgrade. I understand this is not meant for laptops but all-in-one Desktops, but that it should nevertheless work. Could someone verify this information?

I was also wondering about a RAM upgrade. I think I read somewhere that the 6930G can only have 2x2Gb RAM max, which is what I currently have. I am almost positive it is DDR2. Would DDR3 work? Could I install more RAM, say 4x4GB for example?

One final question :) Would I have to flash my bios in order to upgrade my new CPU? The 6930G was not "Windows 7 Ready" and I have found some minor problems running Windows 7. (Many drivers are meant only for Vista). Would an intel vista driver (if that is what I would need to phlash my CPU) work?

Sorry for the barrage of questions. The help is really appreciated.

    Thanks!

    One more question...

I am also looking to upgrade my GPU, and have decided to go with the NVidia GeForce 9600M GT A1 512MB DDR3 MXM II VGA Laptop Video Card...

I currently have the 9600M GS and from reading this forum it seems like the GT is a good upgrade.

I am not sure whether the GPU has anything to do with this, but I have an HDMI out port on my 6930G and was wondering whether the GPU listed above will still allow me to use the HDMI out. The description of the card says VGA so I am a bit weary that it will only support VGA out, and not HDMI.

    Thanks again.

    Hi jkellz,

I would avoid the "E8435 SLAQD Socket P CPU" as it looks like it has a TDP of 55Watt - thats 20Watts more than what the 6930g was designed to house so will run very hot.

There is apparently an E8435 "SLGEA" which is only 44Watt and would work fine.

It would pay to update your bios before installing a new CPU, when I installed W7 I didn't use drivers off the Acer site, most were included with the W7 install and I updated them directly from the manufacturers wesites (eg intel, nvidia etc).

The 6930g will only accept DDR2 ram, it has two ram slots available and will accept up to 8gb (2 x 4gb sticks).

The 9600M GT DDR3 is a good upgrade, did the same myself, just check with the seller if the graphics card is compatable with Acer (eg has the Acer VBios).
Your HDMI and VGA outputs will still work fine, the output is done from the motherboard after the graphics card does its thing

    @lucino:

Thanks for the great feedback. I guess there is a lot of room for upgrades on this laptop. That is awesome.

I placed a bid for the processor I mentioned above and am the highest bidder... probably will win and will be stuck with it I think. How bad exactly will having such a high wattage CPU really be? I use the Acer as a desktop replacement, so do you think a cooling pad would do the trick?

Probably also defeating the purpose of getting a 3.06GHz processor, but is it possible to "underclock" it to a lower wattage in order to make it run a bit cooler? How would I do that?

One more thing... Wouldn't all 96700M GT's have the Acer VBios installed on them? Is it possible to flash the GPU with the appropriate VBios?

    Thanks again!

I'd see if you can ask the seller to cancel the bid, I would be worried myself that such a power hungry CPU may stress other parts of the laptop- someone more knowledgable may be able to comment on this?

For not much more money you could try and pick up an X9100, 44Watt so will run cooler and you have the option to overclock using "Throttlestop".

Check out the "Undervolting Guide" here on the forums, no harm at all and will keep temps down as much as possible, I personally use a program called CpuGenie- however the program is no longer supported and the company is very very slow to reply to emails, if they reply at all! But you could use the trial version of CpuGenie and run the voltage optimisation wizard to find out stable voltages then use those in the program used in the Undervolting Guide.

Not all cards will have the Acer Vbios as far as I understand, I believe you can flash the bios but it's something I don't know much about sorry.

P8700 should work fine, I'm out of touch with what bios version is current on the 6930g, but it would pay to upgrade to the latest bios before installing your p8700.

    Heya!

I have an Acer Aspire 6930g in which I have some problems with the GPU, Ati Mobility Radeon HD 4650. I'm getting constant BSOD and the corrupted file seems to be Atikmpag.sys.

I'm wondering if there's any relatively cheap replacement I can buy? I've had horrible experiences with ATI, so I'm wondering if it's possible to switch to a Nvidia graphics card?

Thanks for reading, looking forward to any answer at all.

    It's probably heat related.

as Triturbo mentioned it could be heat related. How are your temps? It could also be power related. Are you getting this on AC or battery or both?

It does not appear to be heat related. The idle temperature and the temperature are both relatively low for a lap top.

I am getting the BSOD on both AC and battery.

Alright, I'll check that out thanks!

While it's good to get some tips on why my computer won't work as I want it too, my main reason for coming here is for any GPU upgrade. Most notably if it's possible to change from an ATI card to a Nvidia one.

I do not know if anyone has tried it, but I managed to put GT240M in 6930G.
The only thing I had to do is cut one millimeter of this(photo).

Just wanted to say thanks to all the help on this thread I've successfully upgraded my 6930g to a Radeon HD 4670 512mb DDR3 from a MSI. Had problems with it shutting down quickly due to over heating but all seems well since installing the drivers! Just interested in CPU upgrade now.

ebay. I got lucky and saw one on there and went for it.

can't run the GPU full out or overheats - got around it by setting it to run in battery saving mode in catalyst control centre. I think i need a copper shim between the GPU and heat sinc to help stop over heating.

Hi, i have the same problem with the 4650, look like some part of the GC disturb for the contact direct with the copper. I tried to close the gap with thermal paste but it's not work, still over heating.
I don't have copper shim, so maybe I will try to grind the aluminum part a little bit.

Hi, I'm new over here, but I have an ACER 6930G since years now (I think almost 5 years already).

Tooday I decided it was the time to upgarde it a little because it start to feel slow, and it don't have VT-x (Intel core2duo T5800 with 800Mhz FSB). I just bought an core2duo T9600 wich is 1066 FSB and 2.8Ghz (800MHz higher that what I have now) on ebay and i should have it next weekend. For me it seams a nice thing. But watching over ebay I also saw this : "For Acer Aspire 5920 5920G upgrade GT 240M DDR3 1GB MXM II VGA video Card"

Even if it's not the same computer name, it's the same interface (MXM II). I actualy have an Geforce 9600M GS. Do you think it's worth buying ? Does this card fit correctly without having to mess with the cooler ?

I would also like some links to modified bios with VT-x support (I saw some in an 2010 thread, but the links are dead...)

    Thanks for you answers :)

Using some modified inf file I managed to have the driver install, but then the PC got BSOD all the time (I enter my password, bsod.) I removed the card and put back the original one. I bought a copper shim (Because I think the card don't touch the coller correctly, when I screw it up, the card seams to be distored, looking like the MXM connector is too high, so my BSOD might be overheating...) so I'll wait for it to arrive to try again next weekend.

    Hi,
I'm still using my Acer Aspire 6930 for nealy 6 years now, and even though it is good laptop it becomes slower than my needs. I'm thinking to add SSD hard drive and install the operation system and most used software on it, but I've never used SSD before so the only thing that I know is that they are much faster than the standard HDD. So two questions:
    1. Will this significantly improve the performance of the Laptop?
    2. does SSD comes in same size as the HDD, because I'm thinking to put it in the additional bay for the 2-nd hard drive, but the standard HDD won't fit in there (it fits if I did't put the cover) and on my opinion if the SSD is thinner it should be OK.

Thank you in advance for your opinion.

    1. Depends on your current drive, but if it's 320GB 5400rpm, it will blow your mind :D
    2. Usually 7mm tall (regular HDD - 9.5mm), so it should fit fine.

well, i discovered, that acer 6930 g actually supports q9100 quad core 2.26, cos even in first bios, there is connection, also looking through the bios, the voltages coincide. Still no one found that tried this cpu on this machine.
As i have seen, the situation is the following, that when we cover the cpu of these 4 cores which has 2 lines, the quadrangle which is in the center of the plate does not cover which must be touched at the top of cpu cores shall not cove its 2 lanes completely, so the laptop shall be off after some minutes, that is what i have checked with no doubt, and another problem can be, in the manual there is info that for 2 cores the voltage shall be provided, here we do not know if only for 2 cores, or just for 2, because at that time there were no 4 in production when the model was out.

It`s just like an update, probably some bought this cpu by mistake or not, and so we can confirm what of these 2 reasons can be obstacle or can`t be.
