I have a Acer Aspire 6930<< without the G. Isit possibleto upgrade my GPU & CPU on this? Where do I find the CPU & GPU to buy ?
-
CPU can be upgraded but GPU can't. Your notebook doesn't have MXM slot.
-
So this means only the 6930G has the MXM Slot for the upgrade ??
-
Yes- only 6930G has a dedicated card in MXM slot.
Yours has an integrated card (in the chipset) hence no MXM slot. -
My Laptop Base says the Model: Acer 6930G-583G32MN << this means i have an MXM slot. In the front right corner (below num pad) it says Aspire 6930 but on the sticker just below that it says ASPIRE 6930G. So what do I have then ??
-
Probably 6930G- check what GPU do you have right now (in device manager).
If it's nVidia 9600M GT it's definitely 6920G -
Actually, if it is not made by Intel, then it is the 6930G. (However, the G marking was not used in all countries; in some places of the world, the ATI and Nvidia versions were sold as simply "6930".)
-
In Device Manager it says nVIDIA 9300M GS.
-
thats an mxm card
-
-
Now it is sure that I have 6930G then please tell me what to do with my MXM card 9300M GS (256 MB). Can this be upgraded 9600M GT ?? Any thing better than the 9600M GT which can be installed on this MXM card ? Where can I buy these cards online?
Thanx 4 da help everyone. -
See this thread for more detail on MXM upgrades.
You can upgrade to 9600M GT and ATI HD4650/4670 although securing ATI card with DDR3 is hard these days.
e-bay seems to be the best source especially when looking for a rare and reasonably priced card.
ATI duo is faster but nVidia is easier to come by. In both cases look for DDR3 units. -
There is also the Asus GT 240M, and the Toshiba A500 cards (GT 230M & 330M - hardware mod of the card required).
The HD4650 DDR3 version is also available from Toshiba - again, the same HW mod requirements apply. OTOH the GT 240M is plug-and-play. -
hello .
I have a acer 6930G laptop with p7450 CPU and Nvidia 9600M GT 1GB card (i don't know if it is DDR 2 or 3). It has 4gb RAM. I'm thinking about upgrading CPU and GPU. Is ATI 4650 better from Nvidia 9600m GT? For CPU i'm thinking p9700 from Ebay. Any suggestions? -
Just ordered myself a 9600m GT 512mb DDR3 card off ebay. Cost around £100 with postage.
Already upgraded the ram to 2x2gb PC2-6400 (800mhz). Will be looking into processor/hard drive upgrade next year.
I have been thinking of getting a smallish SSD drive for system installs and making my current drive into an unpartitioned storage drive.
Looking forwards to my graphics card getting here. Been playing SWTOR on low settings and its annoying me -
@koskap: 1GB 9600M GTs always come with DDR2 RAM.
The 4650 DDR2 is about on par with the 9600M GT DDR3 - a slight upgrade from what you have. The 4650 DDR3, OTOH, is a huge upgrade, on par with the GT 240M DDR3. Unfortunately, the DDR3 version of the 4650 requires hardware modding to work in Acers. -
NetRoller thanks for the reply. What kind of mod is needed? Can it be done easily and safely cause i don't know much about modding? Is this one? ( http://www.ebay.com/sch/?_nkw=ati 4..._TV_Cards&_fcid=80&_localstpos=&_stpos=&gbr=1)
thanks -
The mod requires SMD soldering skills. Specifically, one SOIC8 and three 0402 packages need to be soldered to the card.
BTW, you need this card (and someone to do the aforementioned solder jobs). -
My new card will be here on tuesday, can't wait. I was thinking of re thermal pasting cpu at the same time as doing my graphics card.
Whats the best paste to use? I used to use ceramic paste, but its there better stuff now? -
Where can i find more info about this mod? Are these packages easy to be found? Is soldering requiring special tools?
Thanks -
seems you need to be good at soldering to do what your asking. if your not, or don't know someone who is I wouldn't bother.
Already looking ahead to my next upgrade. Going to go for the X9100 processor as it seems to be the best/value I can get for this machine
What is the meaning of SLGFD, SLB3S and so on? Do I need a specific one? -
If you manage to find QHBQ (Engineering Sample) it's your best bet. It's stepping E0, unlike every other X9100 (C0). Clocks harder, runs cooler, what more you could possibly want from a CPU
-
the one I have found is a QBDW with C0 core stepping. Should I get it? priced at £110.
Or should I keep hunting for the one you mentioned? -
I don't know, mate. They are REALLY rare. If you can't find one, you better stay with SLB48, SLGE7. Some ES CPUs lack thermal sensors, or they show inaccurate readings, others are BGA (ball-grid array) with soldered pins which is really dangerous. Stay with S-something or make a good search for a nice ES.

hello guys. i could finally find a place where i can get help.first i have 6930g744g50mn with pm45 express chipset. and p7450 2.13 ghz on it and 9600m gt 1gb version. i have serious problems with my cpu. i want to upgrade it with a p9700 or if my chipset or motherboard allows me to with a T9xxx i need help guys! thanks. (dont mind my grammatical mistakes.) i am foreigner
-
You can upgrade to either of them - P9700, up to T9900, even to X9100
@chadders78 - I did some more digging, and found out this:
-
thank you triturbo
what about my gpu ?? my system is a complete DDR 2 what will be the best choice for me as a graphic card. what should i chose? thanks
-
@triturbo
cheers buddy. have to move at the end of the month, so put the new processor on hold for now. But will be doing the upgrade in feb now. -
9600m GT now installed. Can't wait to get home and see what difference it makes to my games
It makes a great difference. SWEET! -
@hyacinth21 - Starting with the common one 9600M GT DDR3, and the rest are rare or/and expensive ones - ASUS 240M GT, Acer HD4650, MXM-Upgrade 4670 DDR2. Another option is Toshiba HD4650 DDR3, but you better take a look at the MXM thread, since a user would attend some soldering, flashing and so on scary stuff
And it's not on the cheap side either.
@chadders78 - Congrats for the GPU and take your time with the CPU. I haven't built mine for a day -
Got a new graphics card related issue. HEAT!! Its running at 70-74deg when playing games.
I have been resting it on dvd cases so its lifted up to allow better airflow.
Does anyone know where I can get better internal fans from? Just looked at USB fan pads on ebay, so may get one of them if I have to, but would prefer to upgrade the insides. -
70-74°C is perfectly fine for a notebook. MXM cards are usually rated up to 105°C, some even higher.
-
Really? Damn! I thought they should be running same as a desktop. Good to hear though.
Cheers -
First time poster here, and I'd appreciate some honest advice surrounding upgrading my Aspire 6930G GPU.
I am able to purchase an nVidia GeForce 9600M GT 512MB DDR3 MXM II VGA Card for approx. $140 USD, and I am also able to purchase an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 HD4650 MXM II 1GB for approx. $210 USD.
Which card is the best option for optimizing playing World of Warcraft on my laptop? I am currently using the 9600GT that came pre-installed with my 6930G however I am under the impression after reading this thread that either of the above two cards would provide better performace that my current GPU.
Thanks for your help. -
any help on my question above would be greatly appreciated
-
Is the 4650 in question DDR3 or DDR2?
Being 1GB version it's more likely DDR2 but if by any chance it is DDR3 it is a clear winner.
Also which 9600M GT do you have? 6930G came with 512MB DDR3 and 1GB DDR2. -
I currently have the 1GB DDR2 version of the 9600GT, and I was under the impression that the 512MB DDR3 is a significant upgrade in gaming performance, however I may be mistaken, hence the post for advice.
-
It is quite a lot faster that's true but not necessarily that much faster to warrant a lateral upgrade.
4650 DDR3 would be a lot better. -
I am mostly using this notebook to play WoW in my living room, and the current GPU only allows me to keep the settings on low and even still it can get quite choppy at times.
I am hoping that the new GPU with GDDR3 will allow me to up some of the settings and see some performance increase, am I asking too much? -
What version is the HD4650- DDR2 or DDR3?
-
The 9600M GT would be 512MB with GDDR3, however most of the HD 4650/4670 that I have been able to locate are all 1GB DDR2 by the looks of things, I am not sure if the same card in DDR3 is available or not.
Given those parameters, is it worth it to upgrade my 9600M DDR2? -
A quick note to this request for information, it turns out my current GPU is actually a 9600M GS 512MB, which I assume is DDR2 since it is a lower end card.
Given this new information, would the 9600M GT 512MB GDDR3 be a significant improvement to my card? -
Yes. 9600 with higher core clock faster RAM and still some potential for OC would be a good upgrade over 9500GS.
-
@MK1981: Check your RAM type in GPU-Z - I've seen plenty of 9600M GS cards with GDDR3.
@downloads: He said 9 600M GS, not 9 500M GS. A different animal altogether. -
@MK1981: Check your RAM type in GPU-Z - I've seen plenty of 9600M GS cards with GDDR3.
I can add that this laptop was purchased in the fall of 2008, from a big box store in Canada, so I am doubtful that they would use an inferior card to the available 9600m GT option, yet decide to use the GDDR3 inside the 9600M GS pre-installed.
I am a bit unsure as to how I check the GPU-Z as I am somewhat of a neophyte when it come to this stuff.
I am leaning towards buying the 9600M GT 512MB DDR3 from ebay at this point, since it appears it will be a solid upgrade that is readily available. -
-
hello all hope you genius's can help me. i installed the 9600m gt in my laptop started it up worked in low res then found drivers. then restarted got to the welcome screen and crashed there with mad colours on screen..blue screen of death then restarts any ides as iam new to all this .just wanted to play swtor lol..old gpu was the 9300m
-
Reboot in safe mode and install drivers from Nvidia.com or LV2go.
@MK1981: A "big box store" has nothing to do with the video RAM type. Video RAM is not installed in the form of modules; it is soldered on the MXM card. There are plenty of 9600M GS MXM cards in existence with GDDR3 memory. -
did that its got on to desktop once then did the same crashed with the colours looking like they have run or something lol
