Hey! I want to upgrade an i3 to an i5 and I'm not sure where to buy a processor except from ebay. I'm looking for an i5 580M or at least a 560M and the best price is from Taiwan. I'm wondering if any Europeans or Americans have ordered processors from Taiwan and what was the experience like?

    -Thanks

How much does the i5-580 cost in Taiwan? I have nothing to base it off of but if you run into problems with your processor than there's most likely going to be no tech support. I found Provantage, for $284 shipped, and they've got excellent Google Shopper ratings, and no tax.

Those on eBay are ES samples. Should work but I wouldn't take the risk.

I'm curious, what's an ES sample? If I go ahead and buy the 4820tg tomorrow, I was thinking I might upgrade in the future too.

ES stand for engineering sample. It is a sample, testing sample. Usually this type of processor have unlocked multiplier which is the main reason why people buying it - for overclock. However, there is no guarantee it is good. You might ended up with buggy, under-performed processor. As long as you get the one which already been tested/tried, there is nothing to worry about it.

You're getting 4820tg?! Good choice, it is nice notebook. May I know why you don't want to get sandy bridge's notebook instead?

Well the main reason is that people have said that the Timeline Series may be discontinued in the future, and the 4820tgs are rarely ever in stock anywhere I go. I feel like it's a buy-it-now-or-never type of situation.

Plus, the SB processors are essentially slightly better variations of the Arrandale processors with a better integrated gpu, or that's what other people tell me. For my purposes (good gpu, great battery life, portability, 14" screen), the 4820tg is perfect for me. If I wait, the upgrade is most likely only minor, and it may in fact decrease battery life (the ATI 6650 is essentially a higher volted 5650).

Yeah, it is a nice notebook. I was going to get one though but I can't find one with 5650 in it. So, I got Asus instead.

I'm a college student so battery life is a major consideration for me. If I could deal with less battery life, so many more options would have been open to me...but as it stands, I'm lucky that there even is an option that meets all my needs.
