    hello everybody

i have been trying lately to overclock my cpu using several softwares as i do not want to open up my lappy, however none of the programs would let me change the CPU freq. eg. 1600 Mhz to 1650-1700 Mhz and so on...

does anybody know a program that lets you do these things??

laptop specs: Acer Aspire 5000 Series
    AMD Turion 64 ML-28
    1 GB RAM
    SIS M760GX graphics card
    120 GB HD

    any help appreciated
    thanks

I personally wouldn't overclock a laptop. They can easily overheat and be damaged.

And you overclock using the BIOS settings. I don't think they are clock-locked but don't hold me to it.

You can flash your BIOS firmware here: ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_3000_5000/bios

But they maybe other tools that will allow you to overclock without using your BIOS. Flashing the BIOS should only done if desperately needed, I can not be hold responsible for any damage that happens when you use it.

Acer Laptop Bios doesn't allow you to overclock unfortunately. And why do you want to overclock anyway? The processor is as powerful as it is and you'll be generating extra heat + noise with laptop cooling solutions. (Acer laptops are known to run rather warm on 'standard clocking')

If you still want to live on the edge, then try Notebook Hardware Control.

    Jonathan2007,

Warning, given that it doesn't sound like you know what you are doing, with either Bios updates, or overclocking, I would recommend not doing either.

Both of these can seriously damage your PC if you do something wrong, and I really doubt it's worth the effort. Is there something special you need to overclock for?

Can anybody explain to me what is flasing BIOS,what does it mean, what does it do to your PC??

I ask this because I recently bought Aspire 5112 WLMi and I had huge problems with it,blue screens would apper all the time, souncard and modem would just stop working and reinstalling drivers would not help.Reinstalling Windows would only help and then my lappy would work Ok for few days and then the same story all over again.
I was shure it was a hardware problem because Memtest was showing that RAM is causing problems but when I send it back to Acer servis (it is still under waranty) they said they just flashed BIOS and now my lappy is working OK.

But what troubles me is that Memtest, motherboard test... still showes problems/mistakes in hardware,I called Acer and they said that Acer hardware is not compatible with these tests!!!What do you think about this story???

Should I be worried and expect to have problems with my lappy in the future again or IS FLASHING BIOS A STANDARD WAY OF DEALING with PC problems and I can be shure now that my lappy is not having hardware problems  ???

Ok, if you get a BSoD, then read what problem is causing the hang-up.

I know nothing about cars, as a result I'm not going to just rip out the resrictor plate on my 56 chevy. I know nothing about how to replace a water heater, I'm not going to dive in head first and do something that potentially wreck my house and home in the process without either A. having a backup plan and some insurance covering my ass or B. doing extensive research, asking around, and even then proceeding with caution and finding someone else who has done it before, knows what they are doing, and can back it up with experience.

The same goes with bios flashing, installing operating systems, over clocking, and modding hardware. You just don't jump out head first and do something without proper knowledge and experience at your side.

A wise man once said "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail".

What I'm basically saying don't be F'ing around with your pc if you don't know what you are doing. I mean sure it's your laptop and do what you please, but look at all the posts we have had as of recently (at least one a week) of someone doing something they shouldn't have been doing or didn't have the expertice and as a result they are sending their pc back to acer or have a hefty repair bill.

If you post a new message on the board with any BSOD errors you get people here may be able to assist in diagnosis of the issue.

What memtest version/motherboard tests are you using? In theory neither should show errors but it's not necessarily that clear cut.

Only real way to be sure is seeing if it works, if everything is working okay then personally I wouldn't worry about it. If you find something that requires you to flash the BIOS again, I would either send it back to ACER and let them do it, or ask here for assistance, but personally I'd say go with the first option, that way if they mess it up, that's their problem not yours :D

to make a pc run faster

    1. install a fresh copy of windows
    2. have lots of ram
    3. try running some of Tunexp utilities(freeware just google it)
4 make sure it is defragmented etc.

these are all safe where as reflashing a bios well if it is screwed up your computer is finished you will need a new motherboard.

    ouch, they are not cheap...
