I am sorry if the answer to post is somewhere else (I can't find it). Here's my question: I been looking to upgrade my CPU and would like to know what is the fastest (MHz and cores) CPU that my 7720 can use? I am looking at the q9900 or extreme quad core socket p CPU to up grade to. Yes I get my jollies off of stressing the maxium capabilities out of a laptop. I have a Acer Aspire 7720-6556 or somthing close with intel core2 1.66 with 17in LCD and 2 500 western digital scorpion blue harddrives using MS Vista for OS with 2 gig of ram BIOS 1.45. Whew! I've tried windows 7 poor support for intel video and ram and no ir drivers. Oh back to the point, I am looking for to find out if this laptop will support quad core tech and what is the fastest CPU that BIOS ver. 1.45 will allow, please help ?

I'm pretty sure that you won't be able to fit a quad core cpu in it. I think that t9500 is the fastest you can put in this laptop, but I'm not 100% certain. I think I've seen a few days ago someone talking about similar topic and mentioned some processor from extreme series, but I can't find that post at the moment.
Also, make sure you get 2 more GiBs of ram if you can(you probably have 2*1GiB so it would be a bit difficult to upgrade because existing RAM can't be used)! It made a huge difference, for me at least. -
I know as I has read some older post that people had upgraded to as high as t9600 processor but at that time the t9900, q9000, q9100, q9300 and qx9300 weren't available. All of these are pernym socket p mobile processors, but I don't know the limitations of the bios ver.1.45. Don't want to buy a CPU and find out that the bios don't support it. ACER technical support is useless and willnot answer upgrade questions, so I am relying on experienced users that know or has made the changes i am looking to make.

Easy there, Inflixter. You've left out a critical piece of info from your research.
The Aspire 7720 has the GM965 chipset in it, which is limited to an 800 MHz front side bus (FSB). Which means that the newer Core 2 Duos and all Core 2 Quads, which require a 1066 MHz FSB and the GM45 chipset, are completely incompatible.
Just because a CPU has the same socket as your chipset doesn't mean it'll work.
The absolute fastest CPU for your machine is the Core 2 Extreme X9000 at 2.8 GHz. Next fastest is indeed the Core 2 Duo T9500 at 2.6 GHz.
Of course, if you're going to spend that much money, I'd say buy a whole new laptop (with a discrete graphics card for some gaming) and transfer over the WD Scorpio Blues.
