I want to install a 64 bit OS (widnows XP pro sp2 x64) on my laptop because I just ordered 4 gigs of ram and want to speed up my system. Thing is I dont know if I can run it , I have the AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-58 (1.9 GHz , 2 x 512 kb L2 cache) but I read I have to have a 64 bit motherboard also. Can anyone shed some light? Thanks ahead!!

You would definatley get better driver support, acer website has them. If it were me I would go for vistax64 but it's your choice.

Yes I will install Vista Ultimate x64 , how should I install it, will it work by just poping in the CD and clicking full install? Will I be able to use my mouse and keyboard ? After I install the OS will it load and boot properly? Ive never installed an OS onto a laptop and for regular computers, it just works , but I'm scared if I install Vista x64 then mayby things on my computer wont work and I wont be able to download+install the drivers needed to fix it.

Also on this website http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_7520.html under the 64 bit driver column, they have a few different versions of drivers, which ones do I get? Do I have to install them in any order? It looks like there are numbered ones from 1-18, then just other ones randomly put in place?

First thing you need to do before anything is backup all of your personel data (photo's, documents etc).

Then what you need to do is go into device manager and find out what hardware you have. On the acer site you went to, all of the drivers listed are for all of the different variations of hardware that went into the 7520, some of the drivers won't be any use to you as you won't have that specific piece of hardware. Download the ones that you need once you've found out what you have and burn them onto a cd/dvd, this means you have access to them straight after you install ultimate.

Once you've done the above, put the vista ultimate disk in then restart your computer. Make sure your cd/dvd is the 1st boot device within your bios. Then follow then onscreen instructions. Vista setup will ask you what drive you want to install on, input key etc etc, then away you go. Pretty straight forward from there. Install drivers, put personal data back on, then your good to go.

I've opened up device manager, basically the only hardware I found with direct drivers to the acer website is
    03.Audio-Realtek V6.0.1.5449_Vistax86x64(WHQL)
    09.802.11 b+g-Atheros V7.3.1.42_Vistax86x64(WHQL)

Is this normal? I'm not sure if I need the Nvidia Chipset package, I do have an Nvidia 8400m .. thanks ahead

Yes you would need the nvidia, also LAN, card reader, touchpad, launch manager, modem, webcam.

bluetooth and infrared if you have them.

You probably need to go into your bios and set your dvd drive as the first boot device.

It wn't boot from within windows as it's 64 bit, you have to do a fresh install.

I got everything installed and running fine, the GPU (8400m) , sound card, usb ports, touch pad all work... I'm probably forgetting some random drivers, but that will be fixed by windows update right?

w00t, vista 64 bit with 4 gigs of ram!

Good to hear you've got it all working. :) :)

If you go into device manager and check your devices, if any are unknown device or something like that then you've forgotten something.
