When I tilt my thinkpad, hard disk automatically stops and prevents it from damage. Does acer has any such feature? My model is Aspire 5570. Is is safe to place the laptop on my lap and work. Is it ok if i tilt my laptop a bit by mistake? Can I be sure that the hard disk wont be affected?

I'm almost positive that nothing will happen if you tilt it. My 5674 doesn't do anything when I tilt it so go ahead and try. I think you'll be fine.

Define "tilt" your laptop, tilting it (i.e. on a coolpad) should be fine and have no effect, I quite often have my laptop resting on a book at the back to both put the laptop at a slope and to allow for better heat exchange and fan working.

If you mean "shake vigorously" then yes, that would be an issue, if you wobble it a bit from time to time that should be fine, as long as you aren't shaking it lots.

If you are trying to pick your laptop by the hinge, 1) You are pretty strong 2) You are pretty confident that you won't drop your laptop (because that would damage your hard disk

Now, as long as you 1) Don't drop it 2) Shake your laptop like you shake a bottle of drink that has the label "Shake well before use" then you are in for some trouble

I tend to unplug it, and grab the hinge to bring it from one room to another. I often have books or something else on one had so I cant use two to keep it level. So far I haven't dropped it.

I suggest you close it, and handle it like a book.

The only problem is that it goes into sleep mode. I would change it to make to just turn off the LCD, but its a pain to have to change because Im only at school a few hours a day.

You can probably give different settings when you close the lid, and when you are running on AC or battery power.

Ultimately, it's upto you. As long as you don't drop it, and/or shake it vigorously, your laptop should be fine. Acer's build quality is mediocre, so all the more reason to handle it carefully.

Ill be careful  I am currently using a cheap 40gb 7200 hard disk now. Im not using the Acer included one because its only 5400, even though it is 100gb.

lol, no need to be sarcastic about it. Just a word of warning because I had an Acer, and I didn't dare to apply extra pressure (I feared that the plastic would cave in or something).

So yeah, my previous post was my final answer to your question :p

Thank you for all your help. So I can confidently have my laptop on my lap and work :) Ofcourse, that's why it is called 'Laptop'. But I'm just curious to know how hard disk is protected from damage due to shake. It is stopped for a moment?

AFAIK, there is no harddisk protection scheme in middle low Acer. Not in hardware or software.
