    Hi again,
I have an old Aspire 1690 with:
    Pentium M 740 (1.73Ghz, 533Mhz)
    ATI X700

Has anybody replaced the processor on this comp? Is it even doable?

    Thanks,
    Tom

I doubt that BIOS of yours would ever provide support for dual core processors....so your best bet is an intel core solo..!! or you could try out the intel core duo....if you can get a cheap one on ebay..!!

Here are the CPUs to check out for ~~ the T1350, T2050, Pentium M 770 and 780 (although these wont make much of a difference) and the T5200 (which has next to NIL chances of working)..!! and upgrade the BIOS to the very latest version.... :)
    Good Luck..!!

Umm. 915 chipset. That was yonks ago.

    Talking 2001 or thereabouts.

Doubt you can do much with it now as upgrades go.

My advise: Hang on to the machine for as long as possible with it's current OS (probably 2000 or XP or even ME....). Don't try to change ANYTHING now if the comp has been that reliable to you.

    Cheers,
    Theo

I'm afraid you're stuck with Pentium M/Celeron M..you have Socket 479, and, for example dualcore physically fits, bit it doesn't work(tried it)..

Now now....dont dishearten the nice bloke up there....there are laptops that have a i915GM chipset with Core 2 Duos running in them....I am not saying that it will work....but one would never know if it is not tried..

tomdegerth if u are confident that you can succesfully take apart your notebook and reassemble it without ruining it....then go for it..!! or else just forget about it and buy an Acer 3680 or a 5315 and upgrade it to the max..

Yep I know....but same was the case with the i940, i943 and the GL960....all these are said to support only celeron m's....but I guess the datasheets have been proved wrong a number of times on NBR itself.. :p

Hmm apparently core 2 duo will run on a Socket 775(LGA775) with i915 IF the motherboard has VRD11(VRD stands for Voltage Regulation Down. In easy words - delivering the correct voltage to your processor.) and, of course, the BIOS supports it.

Well I really wont be too sure about a core 2 duo....but the T1350 should work.. :)
the i910gml and the i940gml have literally the same architecture....but in the latter all the features had been just tweaked up for a mild increase in performance..!!

I have DDR2 ram in it. Aight, i'll try the T1350 then. What do i need to do first, upgrading BIOS? Never took apart a laptop before for processor replacement. Is it soldered onto the motherboard?

yes upgrade the bios to the very latest version....
and no the cpu will not be soldered....it will be in a socket with a screw near the upper corner....you just need to turn the screw in the anti-clockwise direction and the cpu will become loose and can be removed..!!
here is the service manual.... ftp://www.synapsenow.com/documents/S.G_AS1690_AS3510_BOOK.pdf
The exploded diagram in it might help you to take the notebook apart....!!
