    Hello folks,
Just bought one of these ACER ASPIRE 7720G laptop's from ebay afew days back. It comes with the Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS, but i'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade this card with something that packs more of a punch.

If it is possible, what would be the ideal card for this setup?

The processor is the Intel® C2D T7300 Processor, 2 gb ram, 250gh hd space.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

    CC :)

Yes. I think, one user had successfully upgraded his 7720G to a 9600M GT. :p

A 9600M GT GDDR3 or a HD 3650 GDDR3 will be good. Both are almost similar in performance.

9650M GT/HD 3670 will be expensive and hard to come by.

I've built afew desktop pc's in my time, so i'm not a total newbie when it comes to tinkering about with computers. Unfortunately when it comes to laptop's my experience is rock bottom.

So how hard would it be to upgrade the gfx cards on these things? Also how much would a 9600M GT set me back?

I appreciate the help Andy, thanks again :)

Won't be very hard. The CPU/GPU heat-sink will be accessible by removing the rear thermal module cover. You would just need to unscrew the GPU module out, that's it.

One of those GPUs would easily set you back at least $180....

(Covering the memory chips of the new GPU with the stock heat-sink could be an issue)

Could be abit out of my price range right now the 9600M GT. What about this card - NVIDIA GEFORCE 8800GS 384MB Dual-DVI PCI-Express (tried posting a link to it on ebay, but i can't since i need more then 15 forum posts)

Would that card offer a noticeable improvement over the 8400M GS i currently have installed in this laptop? Right now around £60 - £80 pounds is my limit :(

    Thanks again

Isn't this a desktop card? You need a laptop card MXM compatible....MXM-II actually(not sure!)

Prices are dropping fast it's crazy. Still abit out of my price range though. I guess i'll just have to stick with the 8400m for now, and hopefully in afew months time the 9600m gt will have dropped to around £100.

I'm just pleased to know it's actually possible to upgrade the card in this laptop. Since i just read aload of info on some other websites, about how laptop's can't be upgraded. Guess it all depends on the make & model of the laptop in question.

    Hi Captain :)

I own a 7720G too (and I´m deeply in love with it :D).

Regarding your doubt, you will need an Mxm-II card (9600GT is mxm-ii btw), but unless the card is manufactured by Acer you will need to do a blind vga bios flash with Acer´s card bios file in order to get it to work. Altough it sounds a little complicated, it´s actually simple if you follow the instructions. Search the forum, there´s plenty of info about that ;)

Kind Regards and good luck with your upgrade!!! :)

hey guys just signed up on here to say thanks, when i search for things on the net to get info you seem to come across alot of crap.

i love my 7720g. and had that thought about upgrading it. found out now that i can stick a decent graphics card in here. obviously upgrade the hard drive. mines only got a 160 in it atm. easy to do the ram. now i guess the only thing i would like on here is the bluetooth built in and a tv card built in.

as you can see, i dont want much. lol

so i guess the smart thing would be to go and buy a new laptop that has all this stuff i want. on it. :) lol

but im not gonna do that.

im gona spend more money and have fun and feel cool because i would have pimped my laptop. when ive done it ill post loadsa pics and show you all what ive done. ;)

    regards,

If a 9600m GT is too much for you (200$+) than I would go with an 8600m GT. Its MXM-II configuation so it will fit, and acer has BIOSs for it. (My acer 5920G has one inside). You can get them on EBAY.

Actually, if you would like, I would be happy to sell you my 8600m GTwith any BIOS you'd like preloaded, for a $75 USD (it has been used and overclocked) when I upgrade to my HD4650m, although it may take me a while to get my hands on one of those.

Ive seen them as cheap as $50 on ebay, and as expensive as $200, but thats definately a ripoff

    GOOD LUCK!
