I have been trying to load a retail version of Windows 7 HP x64 using USB on my Windows Vista HP x86 Acer 1410. I am able to boot from USB and the Windows 7 install program starts. I select Custom Install to do a new installation (not an upgrade). After I select the partition to install to, I get an error message like "can't find a system drive to install to..." I have tried this on two different 1410's with the same results. Any ideas?

EDIT: FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was the particular USB SD Card Reader I was using. I don't have a 4GB USB drive so I was using a USB SD Card reader and an 8GB SD card. I switch to a different Card Reader (same 8GB SD card) and it worked first time!!!!

maybe your computer don't support 64 bit?
If you are doing a fresh installation, delete the previous partition(format) it first before installing.

The SU3500 in the 1410 is a 64-bit processor and can run 64-bit windows. I have tried everything from deleting all the existing partitions with GParted using a Linux boot USB stick, attempting to have the Windows 7 install over the existing Vista partition, deleting all partitions within Windows 7 setup and creating a new one. All result in the same error

In all of these attempts I have always left the PQSERVICE partition alone.

I'm no expert on Win 7, but is seems like the install can't find your drive.

You can try going into your BIOS and change the SATA driver mode. Mine was set at AHCI and I had to change it to IDE to get my Linux install to run (though it installed fine in AHCI mode). I know others installed Linux in AHCI mode and it ran fine.

    Good luck.

Updating the BIOS to newest version should solve your problem. Installed W7 x64 on my 1410 with no issues. SATA mode is set to AHCI in the BIOS.

I installed Win7 64 bit from CD with no problems. Do you have an external CD drive? Fresh install on a new drive though. Using it right now on my 1410 AND I had 4 GB of RAM during the install.

    prikolchik,

Did you install from USB memory stick or USB DVD drive? Did you leave the PQSERVICE restore partition in place or did you remove it?

I tried updating my BIOS to latest, Version 3120. I tried the install with SATA mode set to AHCI and IDE. No luck either way.

I've installed it from USB drive that I created following this guide. My harddrive did not have PQSERVICE, because Acer deleted all the information so that I could claim Windows tax refund. When I was installing, I simply created a 50GB partition and selected to install W7 on it.
I think you aren't properly choosing the partition where to install W7.
