I went to buy an extended warranty for my TimelineX 3820t, since the original warranty will expire in August, and Acers website said that the extended warranty is not currently available for purchase in my state (CA). That really blows since it implies that it is available in some states but not others.
I bought the laptop using my AMEX card, so it is supposed to cover it for an additional year. My question is: How long do Acer laptops usually last before needing repairs? This is my first Acer laptop and I hope to use it for at least 3 years. Any recommendations?
Thanks,

MOST laptops make it to 3+ years without breaking. Abotu 15 to 20% break along the way. A large chunk of those failures are right up front, from either bad parts that got through acceptance testing, to poor assembly practices, to parts that test good and just fail early.
Some random failures throughout the life cycle of 3 to 5 years, then increasing failures at the end. Random failures after the first 3 or 6 months or so are much less common, so it'll probably do ok after two years. If it does break, by two years most parts should be available as salvage or new old stock (NOS) and fairly cheap. the exception to this rule is motherboards, which never seem to get real cheap. I'd keep an eye out for cheap refurbbed 3820Ts in a year or two and buy a spare. That'll keep you going long enough to pass it on to somebody who can use an ancient piece of tech in 4 or 5 years. -
