I turned my laptop on, and the screen was fine. Then I took it downstairs and the backlight suddenly stopped working. The logo still lights up behind the laptop and the LCD still works. The display comes up on an external monitor. The problem's in the early stages, and perhaps the lid mechanism has malfunctioned or the backlight has died, but it doesn't explain why it works on an external monitor or why the logo is still lit up. Help please.

You mean that the picture is there but without a light?

And even if the laptop LCD is dead, picture will show up on external monitor as long as your GPU is fine.

That's what I mean, there's no backlight. I can still see the display by shining a very bright light on it.

Are the LCD and backlight one component? If the screen still shows text and images (as I'm writing on it right now), then surely the problem is the CFL itself.
