    Hi

After reading great reviews about it, I took the plunge and bought the 6935G last week.

Its a fantastic machine and I'm really delighted with it apart from one major problem - I can't get Windows Media Player 11 to run at all.

The installation of Vista SP1 appeared to go well and the machine seems to be operating perfectly in all other ways (apart from the sidebar not displaying gadgets properly which does not bother me much).

I can see WMP included in the list of programs when I click on the start menu and I can also see it in my "C" drive under Program Files but when I attempt to run it nothing at all happens. The blue circle appears for 1 or 2 seconds then disappears - thats all that happens.

I'm not sure if this is related but when I go to the Music section of Windows Media Center I get the message "A necessary component of Windows Media Center is currently not available "

As I'm a "silver surfer" with limited computer knowledge, I'm probably doing something stupid (or maybe forgettiing to enable something) but I would really appreciate help in getting WMP 11 to work on this otherwise fantastic machine.

As I use WMP to manage my music, its important to me.

    Many thanks in advance !!

Have you installed any codec? or codec pack like K-Lite?
You said the installation went well, did you do it by yourself?
Have installed any program even if the software doesn't sound relevant to music or video play?
What you can do is update the windows, restart again and try to open the WMP again.

Alternatively, you can re-register the WMP 11 by going Run, type cmd, press enter and then the command prompt will come up, there type

    regsvr32 wmp.dll

Press enter and then a window will pop up, press ok and then try WMP again
If nothing works you can unistall WMP by going Run and type
    %windir%\$ntUninstallwmp11$\spuninst\spuninst.exe
Then you can install it again.

    nklive, thanks for speedy response.

Sorry for loose language but , as I say, I have limited knowledge. What I meant to say was that , as this is a brand new laptop bought from Simply Acer in UK, the procedure to install everything and configure it went well. I just followed the prompts on the screen and then did Windows update - everything seemed to be OK.

Yes - after the initial configeration and set up, I went ahead to install quite a few programs that I've successfully used in the past, Stuff like free AVG, Sunbelt firewall and Google Chrome etc.

As regards music I also downloaded the VLC player which I've also successfully used in past. This works as usual on my new machine.

I did not install any codec or codec pack like K-Lite.

I tried to re-register WMP as you suggest by running the regsvr32wmp.dll command. I tried it both normally and also "running as administrator" but on both occasions got the message "regsvr32wmp.dll is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

Is there anything else I can try before uninstalling WMP as you suggest ?

I've never uninstalled anything via "Run" before and I'm a bit nervous about trying.

Will this uninstall procedure uninstall WMP easily ? Also, are there any risks ?

If I do the uninstall, where can I download WMP to easily re-install in my existing Vista o/s ?

Sorry for all these questions but, as I say, my knowledge is limited.

That's because you didn't put space between regsvr32 and wmp.dll
Just copy and paste the following line:

    regsvr32 wmp.dll

You are right you should do it as administrator

That might be the reason why you can't use WMP 11. I've never used VLC but sometimes with my MPC Homecinema, I made some changes that caused the WMP to have the same problem like you.

It shouldn't be a problem, but you are right maybe you shouldn't do it. If you want to download WMP 11 though, go here

    Windows Media Player 11

To be honest, I think VLC is causing the problem so even if you uninstall WMP and install back again, it won't fix the problem since it's an 'external' source corruption.
Uninstall VLC and any other video/audio related program and try WMP again.

    Hi again

You were exactly right about me not leaving a space - when i cut and pasted as you suggested the command was successful.

However it did not make any difference and WMP still did not work.

Then I uninstalled VLC -- ran the command again ..but still no luck.

I then uninstalled Acer Arcade delux as it was the only other video/audio program left on my machine ......ran the command.....and still no luck.

I now have no audio or video programs at all on my machine and WMP 11 still does not work.

    Any other ideas ?

Could it be the default or access settings perhaps ? Now that I have no player on my machine apart from WMP what should these settings be ?

As this is a brand new machine and everything else is working, its driving me nuts !!

Look forward to receiving more suggestions. Thanks again !!
