Recently bought a used Acer Aspire One D255 Netbook with Windows 7 Starter pre-installed.

Even after reverting to factory configuration by reinstalling the OS from the hidden partition, the computer ran so slowly it was painful to use.

I connected an external CD drive and installed Win XP instead, found and installed all the correct drivers, and now the computer is running quite well. To install XP I had to change the SATA mode in BIOS from AHCI to IDE mode since my XP install CD does not have an AHCI driver.

After installing XP I tried changing the SATA mode back to AHCI, but the computer won't boot (goes into an endless reboot cycle). I downloaded Intel SATA AHCI Driver 8.9.4.1004 from the Acer website, but it won't install - gives me an error message that "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software."

    So here are my questions:

    1. Assuming it's possible, is there any advantage to switching to AHCI mode with XP on the Netbook, or am I just as well off operating in IDE mode?

    2. If there is good reason to switch to AHCI, would someone be kind enough to explain how it can be done?

    Thanks,
