Clean it up. Manually, not with some CD. If this doesn't work I should think of updating the firmware..

is it less than a year old??

if so call ACER and tell them it quit working... and ask for an ADVANCE REPLACEMENT...........

if it's outta warranty,,, i don't know of much a person can do to "FIX" a slimline CD/DVD... your best bet may be cleaning the lens w/ a damp Q-TIP

    just a thought

It is a couple of years old.
Sorry if i am being stupid but how do i go about cleaning it?? Is the lens on the drawer that slides out or is it inside the laptop?

The lens is in the tray. Clean it carefully.

However, if the drive has had reading problems then it might have dropped into PIO mode, which is very slow and CPU-intensive (DMA bypasses the CPU).

Go into Device Manager and look at the properties of the devices on the two channels of the IDE ATA/ATAPI devices. The optical drive should have a current transfer mode of UDMA2. If you find a current transfer mode of PIO then right click on the channel and uninstall it, then go to the top of the list in Device Manager and right click and select detect hardware changes. This will reinstall the channel with the correct transfer mode.

Many thanks again for the info because i wouldnt of had a clue about that and would proberly ended up getting a whole new drive.

I'm glad to hear that the problem is fixed without great expense.

I've had it happen to me in the past. Damaged or badly burnt discs are the likely cause.
