    Hi,

I hope someone here will be kind enough to help me to connect my wonderful Aspire 6920 to my equally wonderful P223w monitor.

I don't have much much knowledge of such things so feel free to explain any answers in the most basic of terms.

Here's the situation as I see it:

One laptop, one monitor and one VGA cable. All work independently.

Turn off laptop, turn off monitor, connect the two with the VGA cable.

Switch on the laptop and the monitor.

The monitor displays the early part of the boot process, the laptop does not.

At the password screen to log into Vista both are displaying the same thing.

When the desktop appears all is well for anything between 15 seconds and 2 minutes. Then the mouse icon changes into a working icon, the screens flicker and the monitor says no device connected.

Then in a terminal loop it will return, the laptop screen will disappear, the resolution will change, they will both appear again.

I have tried my best with the mobility center, display settings and the NVIDIA settings but to no avail. Its very hard to look at these settings with the two connected because the displays keep changing.

Any thoughts on how I can solve the problem?

    Thanks.

have you tried FN + F5 to switch from LCD to external monitor?

Thanks for the tip bigozone, I did not know about that.

Unfortunately it did not work. There was a glorious moment after log in that I had the desktop on both screens. It had appeared in 600 x 800 resolution. It seemed stable. So I had a look at the windows mobility center and it said no display was connected. I clicked connect display and the loop returned with my monitor cycling between "auto config" and "no display" whilst the laptop screen turned on and off with the mouse icon in working mode.

I tried FN + F5 on all of the options to no avail. There seems to be nothing physically wrong as I sometimes see my desktop on the monitor. This mouse icon working makes me suspect that the Vista, NVIDIA and Acer software are all trying at once to cope with the attached monitor. Too many cooks?

I'd suggest to PM a Mod to move this thread to the HARDWARE forum, this way more users will see it and could help you..

I have no experience with external monitors, sorry..

I just connected the laptop to the projector and monitor at work, all ancient looking machinery. It worked perfectly. So the search for a solution led me to Acers driver downloads, I found a download for a driver using vista OS.

    http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/fo.../au&siteid=8116&words=all&keywords=&areaid=12

I grabbed it asap and unzipped the files.

Now, what do I do with them?

There are 3 files. A security catalogue that tells me its valid. A setup information file that tells me the INF file does not support this type of installation when I right click it. Finally, there is an ICC profile which when right clicked gives me an option to install profile. Naturally I clicked this pretty sharpish, then nothing seems to happen. Of course it may have installed quick sharp like and the problem may be solved. I shall find out when I return home.

If you are in the know and have finished laughing at the blind fumbling of a computer illiterate maybe you could spare a minute to let me know if that sounds about right, with the 3 driver files you understand. On Vista.

    Thanks.

You sure you didn't install the p223w driver on your LED monitor? I'm not into this, the only time I tried to connect an external monitor I failed(maybe because the monitor is broken). Anyway try to select the external monitor into Display Settings and then install the drivers..

    Thanks atthegates.

I had attempted to install the drivers whilst at work. Its hard to do anything with the monitor connected as the displays keep switching on and off. I will try your suggestion shortly, although I am not sure about the procedure for installing the drivers I got.

    Fingers crossed.

In Display Properties-Settings section there should be a 'Advanced' button. Go there. Find 'Monitor' and see what monitor is reported. Make sure it's not your LED.
Click 'Properties' go to 'Driver'. Click Update. Don't let Windows to install automatically do it manually, so click on 'Browse My Computer for driver software'. Select the directory when you unzipped the drivers. There should be a INF file.
If its all correct you should see a list with devices. Select the right one for your monitor.

Again, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE UPDATING THE EXTERNAL MONITOR and not the Notebook LED Monitor.

Another think you can try. Connect the external monitor, then go to 'Device Manager' and scan for hardware changes. It should find your monitor. If it does, go to the whole Update procedure: select the found monitor, rightclick then 'Properties', go to 'Driver' and hit 'Update'.
By the way the monitor should be detected like 'Default Monitor' or something like that..Search in 'Monitors'..

    Hi all

I have exactly the same problem when trying to connect a projector to the vga port.

Seems like vista is stuck in a loop! Cursor keeps changing to busy symbol and projected display goes on and off.

Odd this as it doesn't happen with my other 2 laptops.

I also have the Aspire 6920G by the way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Si

Allow me a moment to quietly scream profanity into the ether.

Right. Sorry about that but this is a tad frustrating.

sdwebb, I would love to know if you have exactly the same problem as me. I have spent the entire day using the laptop at work connected to another monitor and a projector without any problems.

I return home and decide to try my luck here. No joy. I am unable to try atthegates suggestions because there is often no other monitor listed, in the display settings it only says my generic pnp monitor on nvidia 9500m gs. There is an option to select default monitor on nvidia 9500m gs but after it is selected and applied, it defaults to the generic one. (hope someone is following me there!)

Sometimes the P223w is working, at this point the option for multiple monitors is automatically selected. Bear in mind that when connected the screens change resolution, flash, switch off in a loop that occurs every 15 seconds, its kind of painful to watch.

However, and this is where I would like sdwebb to step in, I have just loaded up in safe mode. In safe mode the P223w is working, stable and just as beautiful as the day I bought it. But my laptop monitor is off. I could actually live with that.

Sdwebb could you report what happens when loading up in safe mode please?

My totally random and uneducated next guess is focussed on my NVIDIA. When connected to the P223w the NVIDIA control panel just grinds to a halt, attempting to look at what options are displayed is impossible with the P223w connected. When I was in safe mode I was not able to access the NVIDIA panel, lo and behold the P223w worked well.

On a brighter note I did drop a line to Acer support in Australia. They got back to me with in 24 hours, which is pretty decent as I explained that I bought the laptop in Thailand. They suggested that I enable plug and play monitor, it seems to me that PnP is plug and play and it is already enabled. Still its good to have started a dialogue with someone at Acer.

When I find a solution I will be sure to post it.

What is your Nvidia driver? Are you running Vista or XP? Did you checked if Nvidia Control Panel can 'see' your external monitor? If it does, you have to enable the monitor from there.

The NVIDIA driver was apparently the latest version that I needed, it gave no option to auto upgrade. However since this malarky began I have now installed a vga nivida driver available on acer website, to no avail. Today I have manually installed the driver from laptops2go, again it has not fixed my problem.

With the P223w connected the NVIDIA panel will somtimes see the laptop display and an analogue display. However as THE LOOP OF DOOM progresses NVIDIA then doesn't see it. It only sees the laptop display. I have tried to select the options I need but the fact that NVIDIA sees it and then doesn't seems to be the problem, or maybe its a sympton!

I am on VISTA Home premium 32 bit. (its my first go on Vista)

I have spent the last few hours having a look at the ACER software to see what I can uninstall that may be causing a conflict. I had a long look at GRIDVISTA then uninstalled it, bt the problem wasn't fixed. Then I ditched Arcade deluxe again no luck.

I am currently looking on the net for info on the ACER mobility center. I don't know if it is a part of VISTA, or some kind of duplicate program. Basically I am trying to eliminate any unnecessary software that has some influence over the display.

Its a puzzle, thanks for your replies.

    Thank you very much atthegates!!!

That seems to work. I am over the moon.

I went accessories, system tools, task scheduler, display all running tasks, clicked TMM, clicked End Task.

I now have a my P223w connected to my 6920G. It is stable and displaying perfectly.

    Thanks again.

However, there are still some minor issues (aren't there always)

    1. It's 00:30, I am tired and have forgotten why I wanted the monitor connected.

    2. Will I have to disable TMM every time I want to use this monitor?

    3. The NVIDIA control panel works perfectly when using clone mode, but seems to return to freak mode and lock up if I click configure the monitors independently, dualview.

I will check it out when I am not so tired, and also pass on this info to the guy I was chatting to at ACER.

    Once again, thanks.

    Glad to help.

What do you mean? I don't get it :)

I suppose you could delete the entry in Task Scheduler, but I'm not sure if the Nvida will recreate it again.

    I don't know really..Check this page..maybe you'll find something useful there.
