I thought I would share my experience with my Acer TravelMate.
I bought it about 18months ago and started having probems with the USB sockets within a few months. Over the next few weeks, all three became unusable. The connections just would not work.
As it was guaranteed, I sent it off for repair, and was told that it was not covered as the damage was considered accidental. I queried that, as in my opinion the machine was poor quality. The modem etc worked fine in my pc.
I had no choice but to pay up though, to get it fixed, which I did so, and it was repaired and returned.
HOWEVER....the corner was completely bashed in. I photoed it and sent in the picture with a complaint. The packaging was not damaged so the carriers were blameless.
Acer have refused to take responsibility, saying that their quality control would not have returned it damaged.
I have registered the complaint with Trading Standards, and followed their advice with letters, to no avail. I am now advised by TS to take it to Small Claims Court, which I am considering.
So BE WARNED. Acer are unscrupulous, and have little regard for their customer service image.

Acer has like bi-polar customer service or something. Depending on who you get, you may get everything fixed quickly and at no charge to you, or you may get a b*tch rep who will be stupid about your requests. It seems like the luck of the draw to me most of the time. But definitely yea, I agree that Acer's build quality isn't terribly reassuring. For my TM8204, I thought it would have been sturdier and less flimsy. I wouldn't dare put this laptop through any sort of physical stress. My friends cheap Presario v5000 is built stronger than this.

Hi and thanks for all the replies.
It does seem like it's the luck of the draw when returning an Acer.
I have send several letters, all reasonable in my opinion, but the answer was the same on each occasion.
I have not had occasion to return our Dell, but so far no problems with it. I hope it proves to be better built than the Acer.
I bought it from a large UK supplier who were no help, just directed me back to Acer. -
Thought I would share my Acer warranty experience.
My display went out... DEAD!!
I called them, told them the problem, they asked my serial number and my address. They said Fedex would be at my house in 2 hours to pick it up. This was on a friday. Fedex showed up and took my lappy away.
The following monday I recieved a call stating they had received, repaired and were shipping back my lappy that day. I recieved it on tuesday in better condition than I had sent it back, turns out they simply pulled the hd put it in a new unit and sent it back.
I have owned many brands of laptops, and have never had a better customer service experience in my life. -

Man you're lucky....Acer repair depot broke my laptop more often than not. But I'm just unlucky.

I have an Acer Ferrari 4000. Since October last year they changed 2 displays, 2 motherbors, one hard hrive.Last time when they chneged the hard drive and they return one stick of memory like defective (was an upgrade and is not covered by the warranty even if the machine burn it) me laptop worked about one day. Right now it's not working and I am asking them to replace the unit or I am going to Small Claims Court. The computer is still under the original waranty (one year) with 2 more of extended one.
So do not but ACER ! -

My 5672 went to TX too. It was fixed without any trouble, and I was happy with what they did. My experience with them was pretty good, and I have no complaints. It overheated, but worked fine though. I could do everything except gaming. I do believe some sort of luck is involved. I don't know why it is like it is, but it is like it is. Can't do anything about it.

mine went to missaga ontario canada no problems.

I have a friend who had some problems with his Aspire 1610... it had been crashing randomly for a while so he sent it in to the service centre in Ontario, and they not only replaced the motherboard but also the top of the laptop case, which had a slight crack in the hinge. I can imaging the frustration that people must get when they get their units back in worse condition than when they sent them, but it seems like their Canadian customer support people do a good job.

Let me know how you go with the small claims court, because I might do the same. -
I'm in Canada

I bought my second Aspire in fall of 2006. Second Acer, third laptop, ninth computer bought and never had a problem before. Wouldn't stay connected to my wireless modem more than 15 minutes.
Acer service said UPS would pick it up in 2 days at an appointed time and have a box prepared for shipping. They did. I got it back in 2 weeks and it had the same problem. I called and the service was repeated. Same problem.
I didn't want to chance shipping it again for no reason so I took it to back to Circuit City and asked for a new unit. They said no way. I called Acer one more time and was told that after two unnecessary services, they would never work on my unit again!
This was 3 months into a new product warranty. I replaced the wireless card and the connectivity problem was solved, but after 30 minutes or so the hard drive would crash, so I replaced it too.
This Aspire is not nearly as stable as my other one, and my Toshiba was the same price with a larger hard drive; it's the only computer I don't have to fiddle with at all.
If I had known the Acer was as-is, needed a wireless card and hard drive and would still be quirky, I would have paid $19.95 for it.
Considering Acer? Read this first.
