1. How would Acer's Quality compare to my Inspiron 1501's?
2. Where, in your opinion does Acer fall short?
3. How well does Acer, overall, take care of it's customers?
4. How is the general screen quality on Acers?
5. I'd prefer dedicated recovery disc, do they include these? I'd also like an untampered copy, with no bloatware(of the OS).
6. I already have a Vista DVD, if I wanted to clean install, it'd be just like entering the key that came with the laptop, no?
I'm looking at this laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115477 in particular, any comments on that particular model?
I am aware that that comes with XP, but soon it will be Vista only.

1) Its worse
2) they dont fall at all
3)Youd have wished to kill yourself

1) No problems with Acer so far. My son's Inspiron 6400 had an early dual core Intel cpu with a dedicated X1400 256Mb graphics card. (He's a keen online gamer) The card failed after a week and we were without the laptop for two months waiting for the cards to come into stock.
2) I feel it would be most unreasonable for me to criticise Acer at the moment, I've had no problems and my only issues are coming from applying upgrades well outside the printed specs, something I cannot criticise Acer for in any way. In fact I would compliment the versatility and capability of the platform.
3) Haven't contacted Acer, who would need to with a site like this!
Dell were absolutely horrible, incompetent diagnosticians with poor scripts, trying to send me parts when there was clearly a basic problem with the graphics on the laptop. This was followed up by the usual run around on fix date - why they felt the need to lie I don't know, but they did, irritating me on top of the inconvenience.
In fairness, I must say the laptop has since worked flawlessly, and been upgraded to 2Gb of 667 RAM. It also survived a glass of water on the keyboard as it was powered off immediately and left to dry out slowly for a week.
4) Screen technology is changing very fast and almost anything you buy will look dated relatively quickly. Best to have a look at one in the flesh at a retail outlet if this is really important to you.
If you mean resistance to damage, I would suggest that you treat it as your most valuable possession, and always carry it in a padded bag so that the laptop never comes into contact with hard surfaces.
5) The 2 5315s I've seen don't have dedicated recovery discs and there is lots of lovely bloatware to keep you amused for hours.
6) No comment, ask MS, its their licence scheme.
The spec looks nice, but are you likely to want an integrated camera for IM during the life of the laptop? -
Yes I agree with Quitly if you take them they last long time I had My aspire 5670 until i sold replacd with tablet pc but overall the from i seen acer and we sell alot them is they not that bad we have seen issues but they always fix them acer canada support helpfull
yes burn recovery disk and do clean install -
1. No idea never owned dell, no problem so far with my 5715Z did a CPU/RAM/HDD upgrade very easy, notebook is totally accessible.
2. Umm...customer support?
3. Judging from the threads and opinions here in NBR..pretty bad care.(no personal experience though)
4. Screen quality is good(personal opinion!)
5. No, they don't provide any kind of CD(s)/DVD(s), you receive a D2D recovery partiotion, and you can make recovery CD(s)/DVD(s) though using the D2D partition and eRecovery(Acer tool). Recovery is pretty unattended(i've heard), but, unfortunately both ways recovery puts all the ACER utilities..
6. No idea. -
Nope, I dont really want a webcam.
Thanks Everyone. -
So I am not sure if what I can offer will help but take it for what you will:
I have an Acer Aspire 2000 that is now over 4 years old. Only issue was at just under 3 yrs, the hard drive failed. The service aspect of this issue is the only negative I have had with regards to Acer. I bought an extended warranty to 3 years so I expected no issues with replacement. The warranty said it could be done at the local depot (where I bought it as well) so I thought I could work with them to do the data recovery. So I phoned them up and was told the warrant conditions had changed and I had to sen the laptop to southern Ontario, with no chance of data recovery. So I just bit the bullet and had the depot do it at my cost. So when I replace my Aspire with a Travlemate in the next few weeks, I probably will not bother with an extended warranty.
The screen is very nice and I am happy enough with it that it will be replaced with a Travlemate 6592 while the kids get the Aspire.
Best of luck in your decision.
Oh, I have had horrible service from Dell for a projector. Based on that experience and the loss of $1,800 CDN I will never buy from Dell again. Ever. -
Well Vedya...
Interesting post from you.
You obviously have never owned an Acer. And your unecessary and Acer bashing comment does not go down well here on the Acer forum.
Back up your post with personal experience of Acer. That would be nice.
Not what you have read.
Bye bye

Ok Thomas... i'm awake now and maybe able to put together full sentences..
1. not sure about the dell and different models of acers have different build quality levels.. i own the ASPIRE 5315 the cheapest and cheapest made ACER of the current time... i'd not recommend dropping it... but it's robust enough to stand up to 4+ hrs a day for the 8months i've had it.... and to be honest this is the easiest laptop i've ever worked on.. and i've seen my share in the past 15 yrs
2. customer support is ACER's biggest downfall... if you are not a tech minded person who is comfortable playing w/ the OS and drivers.. then ACER may not be for you ((i know that's not the case w/ you))... the cheap price comes at the cost of customer support.
3. Acer is more than happy to have a LAPTOP that is under warranty sent in for repair... but that repair often involves reverting the HDD back to factory image.... if you have to send an ACER in for service, i advise having the problem and issues documented and including as much detail as possible when sending the laptop back.... that way they know what the problem is and know they are not dealing w/ and id10T..
4. i love my CRYSTAL BRITE TECH LCD... it's a bit shiney... but shiney can be pretty
5. my acer came with NO DISKS.. you have to create your own RECOVERY DVDs using the acer BLOATWARE... then format the drive and install from your retail VISTA DVD...
6. use a software prog to retrive the PRE-INSTALLED KEY.. 99.99% of the time the PRE-INSTALL KEY doesn't match the KEY on bottom of the laptop on the COA... but MS will activate the COA key if you go thru the phone call to MS to get it activated
the model you have selected seems to be pretty respectable... though i have no experience with anything other than the ASPIRE 5315... it looks better built and more polished than mine.
hope that helps

1) For both, it depends if you are lucky or not.
2) Depends on who picks up the call
3) They use BurnIn test to stress test laptops for problems, if found will replace whatever that's not working. It also seems to me that they start working on laptops with low level techs and working up the chain. So, there maybe a few send-backs.
4) Really subjective.
5) They come with no Recovery Discs but a recovery partition in the hard drive. An acer rep told me that you can actually request a set for free within 90 days of purchase. (This is not mentioned anywhere.) But, you are entitled to a copy of windows on a disc when you purchase your system.
6) In XP, you can actually backup a clean copy from your system. You can then save a few files to preserve your oem windows with the pre-installed key. -
How is the battery life on Acers?
-
6 cell battery gets me 2.33 hrs w/ rmclock undervolted to 0.95v using performance on demand w/ all multipliers enabled..
-
Wow...
I get 2 1/2 - 3 hours + now...
And at 70% total health, no undervolting, 6 cell.
Hmmm..... -
I was get 2 hours on my 5670 when had some new model are rated for 4 hours
-
I am thinking of upgrading the CPU and before putting my hands into it, I would like to hear someone in this forum share his experience in hiw to dismount the
heatsink system in the right manner. -
Mike, always check the last post's date before adding your reply to prevent bumping up old topics - this one hasn't been touched since July. This is something that easily could've been its own thread.
