Today I was taking out my laptop, when the LCD suddenly cracked. It appears to have started in the top 1/3, along the right side- right where the spacer pad is located.

I have not dropped, nor caused any physical damage to this laptop. Just today, it suddenly appeared as I was taking it out of its case. It comes to school with me every day and I have not had any problems before.

I believe that the pad but too much pressure on the screen, causing the crack. My warranty is good till Jan, 2008. Will Acer repair the screen under warranty?

    You can try...

Unfortunately they will probably try to tell you that you must have dropped it or something to cause the crack and it's not covered by warranty, not sure how you can prove one way or the other.

Never hurts to ask. If they say no you'll be right back where you started. If the notebook is in good physical condition it may help your case.

Well there is a small chip/crack on the same side that the screen is cracked on. However this was from a much prior accident when I did something to it with the case.

How much would it cost me if they charge me?

If the screen cracked as a result of its own accord (as opposed to your own negligence or error) then Acer is obligated to replace the screen. Do call them and speak with a service rep.

Here is a picture of the screen. The gray box shows the spacer pad.

Worse then I though....if you cant fix it for free over warranty with Acer (i find their customer service to be awful) then ur plain better off getting a new screen for lots of money.

I should mention that its on the base of the laptop, no where near the LCD.

I took a closer look at the area and found that the area behind the pad is slightly raised, compared to the rest of the bezel. I don't know if this is what caused the crack, or is as a result of the crack.

I filled in the online form and Fed Ex will be picking it up Friday.

Update: I talked to a few reps and they say that it probably wont be replaced. They advised me that as much as they went to see it replaced- the techs get the final decision.

However I have been able to get a rep to do an advanced exchange on the LCD panel. So I should have a new panel here by next Friday. After I swap it out, Ill return the broken one- and the story is over.

Advanced Exchange? Does that mean you are going to be paying for it?

Got an update. After speaking to the supervisor, he said that Acer will be un able to fix this notebook. It will cost me $650 (reduced to $300) to have the LCD replaced.

I am very dis-pleased with Acer's handling of this situation. The Aspire was taken care of, and never went anywhere without its case. I firmly believe that it was a loose WiFi antenna wire which caused the LCD screen to crack. If I have it sent back to me, and I find that the WiFi wire caused the crack- Acer will be hearing from me again.

The supervisor also stated that any "damage" to the notebook was not covered under warranty. The fact is that I never damaged my notebook. The supervisor did not interpretation Acer's warrantly cause as it was written.

I no longer support Acer and advise anyone who is consitering buying on- NOT to, as I have received less than great service.

I know it hurts, but the pain will pass...

Time heals all wounds, and with time, you will be comfortable with turning that broken laptop into a desktop or headless print/file/skype/whatever server and buying a new lappy. I had to do it recently with a laptop that my wife "conveniently" dropped. Funny enough, she never seemed to like that laptop.

The fact that they offered you a more than 50% discount on screen replacement is pretty kind.

But even with a discount, a broken laptop screen is to a computer what a broken leg is to a race horse.

I think Acer is doing more than they should for you.

Point taken, but I dis agree with your last statement. Dont take this personally,

I do not believe that I should have to pay for something which was not my fault. Im sure you would not be too happy if you had to pay $300 to replace your Black Berry if it didnt turn on one day.

But it's not clear to Acer it was their fault. They delivered you a working screen, which are known to be fragile, and you returned it all cracked.

How can they know for sure it was a manufacturing issue when people crack their screens all the time.

Not that I would ever use a Black Berry (my 700wx is better), but if I showed up with a cracked screen, I would never expect them to replace it for free.

In that case when I get it back, Ill open it up and see if there was anything behind the screen. Ill make a video from when the FedEx man drops it off, till when I open it and see if there is/is not something behind it.

I have the same problem as you as my laptop lcd cracked all of a sudden a day when we opened it. It is brand new just 2 months old. We did not drop it or do anything to physical damage it. However Acer said it was not covered under warranty and they said we have to pay $650 to repair it. Who did you talk to (a supervisor or someone higher) to get the price reduced to $300 ? I was so pissed off that I have to pay extra 600+ on top of the $1800 we put on the laptop. Please advise ASAP as they are holding off fixing other problems (wireless network card & speaker not working)

You could have bought the $199 3 year total protection plan. Just buy that if you are still in warranty and then send it in to get repaird. Just $199 to fix your lcd instead of $300 or $649, and you get full accidental coverage for 3 years.

But most of us don't expect our laptop to have screen crack otherwise all of us would have bough the warranty plan.

Anyway, to the topic starter, hope you can get your screen fixed. Yeah it sucks, with the extra 300$ u paid, you could have added that to the original price and gotten yourself a much better laptop. Good lucks.

Unfortunately that's life with laptops, I don't expect my Motherboard to die, or my hard drive to die, but I've had both happen on a number of laptops (not Acer, other brands).

Laptops unfortunately are prone to failure, and with everything crammed onto the mainboard if one thing goes wrong, it's normally "replace the motherboard" time.
