I've found a source for the replacement part through EXTENSIVE research- and found an online user manual. I am not used to building/opening laptops, so I don't know whether I'll need special tools to replace the broken back cover; are there any other parts I may need (such as hinges, antenna WiFi).
Is this even a job I should take on or is it pretty easy?
The LCD is fine- it's JUST the plastic cover I need to replace.
Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy,
Have you had any luck ? e-mail me, I have some info that may help. -
Sigh...you need the Service Manual. It shows you how to strip and replace in an orderly manner.
Unfortunately, posting any Service Guides or Service Manual links is now taboo on the Acer forum.
Sorry and good luck -
Just do a Google search on "Acer Aspire 9410 Service Manual" and you will find a link for it.

I've done it twice and this third cover has cracked also. Did yours crack in the course of normal use? (Mine did
) You will need some type of case opening tool and a small screwdriver. If you have never disassembled a laptop before. You might want to pass on this one. I have worked on an old Quantex and Emachines that I have owned, and Dell's at work. The 9410 does not seem to lend itself to easy disassembly. Delicate and careful are two words that definitely come to mind.
My solution will be replacing the 9410 soon. I am just waiting for a gap in work to replace this laptop and have time to transfer all of my files and programs. -
How tight are the hinges ? I always open my 9301 with two fingers each side of the orbicam -- equal pressure and all-- but too me they are on the tight side. Always close the same way, finger on each corner, equal pressure.

If you have crack on hinges you can send system too Acer service
Its issue for that system and it will be replaced also if your system is out of warranty. -
I did find the service manual online, and received the new back cover I ordered online- but not from Acer. Out of warranty- and there's so MANY online complaints about their service work and attitude toward same that I'm not sending it back to them. I'm doing it myself- and halfway through dissembly- so far so good.
Service manual has some photos- but DEFINITELY not for DUMMIES.
Doggone hinges DID crack through normal use. Purchased it new in July '07. No hardware or software probs- so at least that's good. Again- so far. And given the number of complaints referenced above- I'm VERY lucky to have experienced as few probs as I have. Others' stories are much worse than mine. Last Acer 4 me. -
as I said before :You dont need to buy a cover and replace it by yourself.
If hinges are broken or cover is broken by hinges, official acer service must replace that cover in all casing damage issues for free even if notebook is out of warranty. -
My Acer Aspire 9410 also has a frozen hinge & cracked cover.
I just got off of the phone with Acer tech support and they said that they wouldnt repair it because its out of warranty.
Do you know of anyone that I can contact to get it repaired? -
I also have a cracked cover by the left hinge of my acer aspire 9410 - 17in laptop. I emailed acer about it and they said because my laptop is out of warranty they can't do anything about it. They called it cosmetic. I love what the laptop can do, but I would not consider buying another acer because of this problem and the poor back up they give for their property, especially because this is their design problem. It appears there are a lot of us out there with a tight hinge/broken cover aspire 9410.

Please send me more information about this, I haven't had luck emailing acer about it. -
I would also like to know how to get this fixed for free out of warranty per the recent post of David_P. Please inform the several of us who would like to know how to do this.
Thanks! -
Sorry to revive an old thread. However I have the same problem with my Acer Aspire 9410... I'm off to university soon and I can't afford to buy a new computer. Unfortunately my cracks appeared in the hinges during the warranty period, but I didn't tell my parents (I needed my computer for my exams and was worried they'd tell me not to use it) until this autumn, when the warranty has expired (I wish I'd told them sooner). I really am desperate to have my laptop repaired... I could try to buy a new back for the computer (where the cracks are)... but I don't know where to get them? Or ask Acer to repair (as the laptop is now out of warranty I was told that they would charge quite a lot of money to fix it. I saw above that the laptop should be repaired for free?
I'd really appreciate any advice? -
I have replaced mine 1 time 6 months ago. No have to replace it again along with the LCD brackets and front dezel. I can't get them to talk to me or return my emails. I filed a complaint with the BBB, if that does any good or not we will see. At least they will have a negetive remarl towards them. They need more.

Had the same problem on the Acer Extensa EX5620 I bought for my daughter. Cracks showed in the top cover near the hinges just a couple months after the warranty expired, and she had to go back to college before I could fix it. As a mechanical engineer who has worked with molded plastics, this is as clear a case of a material or design defect as I have ever seen. Is there no recourse for such a clearly defective product?
Shortly after, both hinges snapped off, and by the time she finished finals the display wires broke (no surprise there, but she needed it.) In just that year or so, it also went through about three connectors and power supplies, and the ethernet port and one of the USB ports broke. Hard to see why I should buy a new back cover and display for it...
My son's Acer Aspire has done little better, with a bad power supply connector, broken keyboard, and broken touchpad button after little more than a year. I'm going to try to combine the two computers into one working unit, but no way am I ever buying an Acer product again. They aren't even made to be repaired, bits of plastic break off their covers when you take them apart, unlike better quality laptops that can be disassembled many times without trouble.
