    Hi,

I have a problem with the DVD drive in my new Acer TM 4002WLMI. It's a

    QSI DVD+-RW SDW-082

    Internal DVD-Dual drive (DVD+/-RW).

The problem I have is that 20% of the DVD-R's I burn are not readable on my laptop. The burn process is always completed successfully according to the software but then there is nothing on it. The WEIRD thing is that these burnt DVD's work on other computers!!!! I would expect it the other way around if there was a problem.

I tried different softwares on Windows and on Linux. I also tried different media and sticked to brand name products.

Would it help to upgrade the firmware if available or should I insist on a new drive? I already took the laptop to the store where I bought it. But the sample that was burnt there worked out

Any help ad advice would be very much appreciated![ :(!]

Perhaps you could into contact with QSI or Acer to get the supported media list, the ones that QSI says will work with the drive and buy them. I've heard that QSI drives are picky on media, DVD and CD. What it says on the box does not indicate who makes the disc or whether they are quality discs. You can use DVD Identifier to check the manufacturer id code to find out who makes the blanks. You can look them up on Videohelp.com to see what experiences other users have had with them. I would recommend some Taiyo Yudens. They are made in Japan and are of the highest caliber. Mitsubishi Chemical, Ricoh Japan, and TDK are very good too. A firmware update may help your problem. Sometimes firmware updates fix writing and/or reading problems. Slim optical drives do not generally get a lot of firmware support since most are sold as OEM. Good Luck.

Yeah, I tried this identifier tool... Most of the DVD's that failed were Taiyo Yudens, actually....[ :(]

The main QSI homepage (http://www.qsinc.com.tw) is down and the Nu Technology Inc.homepage (http://www.nu-global.com/) doesn't say anything about that drive [ :(!]. No idae where to het firmware from.

    @ ht2r:

Please keep me informed about Acer's response. The only DVD's, which kinda worked properly, were Prino's 4x DVD-R. But that is not satisfying and it doesn't make sense at all that successfully burnt DVD's can't be read on the same computer but on other ones!!!!!!!!

UPDATE: I just updated to the D363 firmware AND used the Acer recovery disc, and now I'm burning 4x dvd-r (re-branded ritek dvds) perfectly fine with the OEM NTI dvd-writing software.

Hey people, I'm using a QSI SDW-042 and I've bugged Acer about my dvd-rw having the same problem as you do (ie-writing, but not readable). I asked if anyone else had problems, and they said they don't have any other recorded cases of this. I think we need to make our voices heard! QSI SUCKS!!! I've called twice, and am trying to get them to replace it.

I guess this dvd burner is just pretty picky concerning media. I have no problems with Princo 4x DVD-R discs. They are fine when using different softwares. The drive does not work with Maxell 4x DVD-R discs aka TYG01 made by Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd. I read elsewhere that the same goes for Maxell 4x DVD+R dics.

Did anyone try yet to burn a DVD+R-DL successfully?

A frimware upgrade to LX43 is now available:

    http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=126489
("QSI DVD+-RW SDW-082: DVD-R burn problems" in Recording Hardware Forum)

The upgrade is not specifically fo the QSI DVD+-RW SDW-082 in an Acer but in an AOpen notebook. I tried it considering that AOpen is a subcompany of ther Acer group.

The upgrade worked fine without any difficulties. The media support seems to be better but is still pretty poor at first glance.

My first test showed a little improvement at least[ :)].

I have the same problem. I have an Acer Aspire 1690.
My DVD drive is a "qsi dvd+-rw sdw-082"

The problem is intermittent and I cannot figure it out. I have noticed one strange behaviour though.

I took my laptop into the retailer today, and the drive played the dvd fine. I couldnt understand. I said to him that the only difference is that the power is always plugged in when we watch a dvd. Then I clicked and ran some tests.

It turns out that the DVD 'enjoys' reading disks much more when running on a battery. But when we burn disks etc and watch them, we typically use the laptop when plugged in to the main power supply.

I tried this theory out, and not only could I read previously unreadable disks, but I could copy them too (when this previously failed also)...

This is not a solution, but an observation that will one day lead to the problem being defined. Until then, I will wait for the appropriate driver/firmware updgrade that deals with this problem.

    Happy problem hunting,
    Rich

Your acer has a QSI drive?

Mine has a Samsung (AKA TSSTcorp) drive. Never had a problem burning or reading.

They must put different burners in different notebooks.

My Quanta KN1 notebook has the same drive, and I'm experiencing the same issue.

I burn all DVD-Rs perfectly fine, but when it comes to reading it, the DVD-ROM fails. The DVD-Rs read fine in my two desktop computers with Lite-On combo drives.

It's most likely (hopefully) my media. I'm using generic media that claims to be Taiyo Yuden, but I believe they are fake. It is however interesting that I have not made any coasters. They work perfect in other computers, just not in my SDW-082. :(
