    Have a Aspire 1700, ran good for about 11 months then the wireless goes dead and the dvd starts flaking out. you have to understand I got my life in this box. Anyway I bring back to the store and they tell me it needs to go back to mfr to be fixed, Now I've heard the horror stories about laptops coming back from "repair" with wiped HDs so I have them pull the HD. It goes back they say the wireless and the dvd were toast (duh) all bad stuff replaced. They put my HD back in and the thing won't boot. Dang it..now the boys at the shop want to restore it. I tell em to let me have it for the night first. Here's what I got. If I take the DVD out it boots up fine. Put it back in and it hangs at the WIndows screen for..ever (I've stared at it for a good 2 hours at least)

    Any Ideas...could there be a slave/master jumper on the dvd or mb somewhere. I've tried the HD in CS, master, slave.

    Thanks
    Grco

    Since the unit boots with the optical drive removed, it's narrowed down to the optical drive. It's possible there might be a switch on the drive (usually on the back), but if it's not there, it's possible it's an auto-detect unit. If the switch option doesn't help, it's possible it's just the optical drive that's defective. Have does it have any interface adapters mounted on the back of the optical drive or does it just plug straight into the drive? If it has an adapter, it's possible that's defective and not the drive. Since there's was nothing wrong with your motherboard when it went in for service, I'm gonna assume that it wasn't replaced so it's not the optical drive connector on the motherboard. Contact Acer directly and see if they can ship an optical drive to you (since it's user removable, or did you doodle with the system to get the drive removed?) to get it fixed.

    I took the bottom off to access (11 screws) and released the dvd drive (5) [ :D] I thought about the new dvd being defective...you'd like to think the techs checked it before sending it back...I'll be call them boys tommorrow.

    HI,

    I HAVE ALSO A NOTEBOOK FROM ACER, 1703SM.

    THE DVD RAM ON MY NOTEBOOK HAS JUST STOP SPINING ,
    I HAVE TRIED TO INSTALL A NEW DVD ROM - DVD RW - CD ROM/RW
    BUT THE BIOS OF THE COMPUTER DON'T RECOGZIZE ANYTHING ELSE
    BUT THE DVD RAM UJ-811.

    I HAVE SEND THE COMPUTER TO THE OFICIAL SERVICE AF ACER IN GREECE
    AND THEY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

    HAVE ANYONE ANY IDEA WHY;

    IS IT POSIBLE THAT ACER LOCKS THE BIOS TO RECOGNIZE SOME
    DVD DRIVES;
