I have been having problems with my dvd drive recently, back performance etc.

I checked in device manager and on the secondary IDE Channel (the one for my dvd drive) says it's operating in PIO only mode  Slow as hell mode. Use DMA mode if available is selected, but even after a restart it still uses PIO.

It says the drivers for this is microsoft, i read that getting the proper ones are faster / better. It's a Acer Aspire 3023, and I believe the motherboard is ATI XPRESS 200M chipset, can I install drivers for this? I am yet to find any :/.

A few weeks ago I did a re-install so I could convert to NTFS, maybe some drivers are missing?, but im sure this dvd drive problem is very recent.

Any ideas guys?. Help or ideas would be great thanks

As a side note, my primary channel HD is working fine on DMA mode 5.

Uninstall the controller and reboot and check to see if it goes back to DMA mode.

Right click on the IDE channel in device manager(in your case secondary) to which the drive is connected and select uninstall. Usually in such cases, Windows will recognise the drive to work in DMA mode when you reboot.

lol, I should have worked that one out.

Many thanks for the help miner it worked :D, now running in DMA mode nice and smoothly, great help, cheers :)

Im not too worried as everything seems good now :), but I read that the standard microsoft drivers as not as good as the ones made by the chipset makers, im my case ATI.

I remember in the past computers installing VIA drivers etc, where can I find the ATI drivers?, do they even exsist and would it be worth it?

Many thanks, and thanks again miner :)

Actually, I dont think there is any need for any other drivers other than the standard MS ones. The only ATi drivers you will be needing will be for the chipset and if you have a ATi graphics card. Acer's support site should have the stock drivers for you. For the IDE channels, the standard MS drivers should do just fine. One of the causes of the drive going into PIO mode is if you put a bad(scratched) CD/DVD and Windows automatically puts it in PIO if it is unable to properly read the CD/DVD. If it changes back to PIO mode repeatedly then it might indicate a bad or failing drive. So watch for a while and see if it was just a one off incident.

Thanks for the info. I have a ATI gfx card and of course have the drivers for that :). But I don't belive I have any ATi chipset drivers at all installed. None were listed on the acer site, and I have yet been able to find any. I thought the IDE channels drivers were part of the ATi chipset drivers, I guess not.

I hope the drive won't change back to PIO mode, I will keep an eye on it.
    Cheers
