Got a Acer 5672 the other day and was just getting to reformat these 2 stupid partitions into one but when I went to burn the DVD it didn't recognize anything to burn onto. I got some Memorex DVD-R discs and tried 4/5 of them and got the same problem each time. What kind of discs do I need? Shouldn't these work?

They should work. However, Memorex is one of the worst brands you can get, even though they aren't cheap. The best brands are Taiyo Yuden (which you pretty much have to buy online) and Verbatim. With that said, I don't think getting new media will fix your problem... Don't know what will...

So are you saying it's a faulty DVD-RW drive? I would hate to deal with the dreaded Acer customer service so soon after buying it... Should I try to exchange the discs at Target?

I had my DVD drive go out on my 5672. Try either playing a music cd or a DVD movie. If it doesn't work then it's probably dead.

Right when I got the notebook I played LOTR and it worked fine. Do you think Target will allow me to exchange for some DVD+R discs?

Don't think you can exchange them. After all, they are probably "used" - you know, so you can't use them any more - and if they aren't, there's no way for Target to know if they're still usable or not. Still, it may be worth calling them up and asking. In any case, it doesn't matter if it's + or - really, it should burn both, and Memorex is a bad brand, but it's not THAT bad. So the problem is probably with the disk.

Have you tried playing CDs & DVDs now, after you got rid of the partition? Can you burn CDs (if you have any)? If the answers are yes, then it sounds like a faulty drive. If the answers are no, then it's probably still a faulty drive, but I'd try another media that you know is good (like Verbatim) before drawing any conclusions.

Ok, the drive can play DVD videos and recognize CD's as burnable media, but not the DVD-R discs I got. When I right click on the E drive (CD drive) in My Computer it says 740mb free with a CD-R disc inserted but says nothing for the DVD-R discs. I will now open the 5th DVD-R Memorex disc that I left packaged assuming it wouldn't work, see what happens.

Odd... It still says 0 bytes available in My Computer but in NTI CD maker (which I clicked on from the Windows prompt wondering what to do with the disc) it says I have 4704 MB free... wtf is going on here.

Maybe it is a case of bad media then... Have you tried burning it yet?

If it's like my 8204 then the drive says DVD+R DL so I dont know if it even does dvd-r...

I'd be very surprised to see a drive that's capable of burning DVD+R DL and not capable of burning DVD-R.

In any case, Acer 5672's drive supports both: product description on Newegg.
