I've had an Acer Aspire 5101AWLMi for about a year and I haven't used the DVD-RAM drive (a Mat****a) much, but I'm needing to use it more now. By the way, I had Vista installed but have since formatted the hard drive and installed XP Pro on it, though I don't think that should make any difference. The problem is although the DVD drive can read original CDs and DVDs plus burn CDs and DVDs correctly, it can't actually read CDs or DVDs that it has just burnt! For instance, if I was to burn a data CD with MP3s on it the drive would successfully burn it and then read the CD as totally blank. Though when I take the CD out and put it in my TV's DVD player, it plays perfectly. So it's obviously burning fine.
I've used a lens cleaning disc in it and I believe I've got the latest WHQL driver for it, so I'm wondering what else I can do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

I had this problem before with my NEC 6500, when I searched for solution(cdfreaks) the guys told me to upgrade my firmware, but it didn't work..eventually my dvd drive died..
What is your dvd-ram drive? What is your drive firmware version? -
It's a Mat****a UJ-850S.
Thanks for the reply.
Edit: **** = another word for poo. -
For what I find this drive is quite problematic..with almost no firmware support.
You could try a registry mod if you will, although it's not for the problem you've described( it's more like if your dvd drive is not detected)..anyway I will post it if you want to give it a shot.. I want to make it clear its a shot in the dark though..

Actually I have had that problem aswell, where the drive is not detected, but it was when I had Vista installed. Luckily it hasn't happened since I changed to XP, but the OS may have nothing to do with it.
Well, it looks like it's something I might have to put up with (regarding the other problem). At least I can still listen to CDs, watch DVDs and backup stuff that's on my hard drive I suppose. Thanks for the feedback though.
Is there any way of changing a DVD drive in a laptop or should I consider buying an external one for it? -
Yeah, you can replace the dvd drive in (most) of the laptops..it's easy..you can get an external hdd too..I bought external
Also check this thread, the OP has the same drive. -
Thanks very much. I think I'll look into replacing my internal DVD drive, as I've not got much space where I tend to use my laptop.

OK, no problem glad to help
Although I wasn't much helpful..sorry about that I wish I could solve your problem, instead of make you to buy new drive..
