Notebook was fine until I turned it on this morning... My screen is now almost completely dark. Can't see or do anything unless I shine light at the monitor. I tried adjusting monitor brightness options, reinstalling ati drivers and installing bios - still nothing. What else should I do? I'm pretty sure my warranty has expired :(

Looks like only backlight is broken. You should replace inverter and/or the lamps.

i'd start checking Ebay for backlight and or inverter, or even better the entire LCD assembly. you might luck up and find one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. But it's definately in the LCD mech.. maybe someone more knowledgeable can tell us if it's the backlight or the inverter.

    good luck

oh and if it is off it's almost always just the inverter , be very careful doing this your self inverters are dangerous , follow all common sense practices and you should be just fine, remember what an inverter does though it makes a little , a lot,

It is most likely the inverter. Check ebay for a replacement $15 plus shipping. They are very easy to replace. You have to take off the 4 screws holding the bezel on (some careful prying) and then another two holding the inverter.

if it is the backlight bulb its alot more difficult. You have to actually disassemble the lcd which should only really be done in a lab cleanroom. If you do need to change the backlight your better off buying a new lcd.
