My girlfriend's Acer laptop has Vista pre-installed. She WANTS XP instead..
We have already burned the recovery-DVDs - can we just format and install XP? Or more specific, can we also DELETE THE HIDDEN RECOVERY-PARTITON and still be able to do a fresh Vista-instalation form the recovery-dvds (if she decides to go back to Vista in the future)...

I would just backup any data you want saved onto dvd's.....I find those seperate partitions evil in my opinion, just using space

Not sure what you mean.. I'm not talking about backing up data but about the posibility to restore the system (in this case Vista) to day one in case we will need to do so after a full format.. as I said, we have made the two recovery dvds.. just wanted to be sure if that means we can delete the hidden recovery partition too...

In my experience dealing with Acer Laptops (I had two Acers). You do not need the recovery Partition for the Recovery disks to work.

HP and some other manufacture disks require auto recreating recovery partition which can potential overwrite your main partition depending on your setup. Acer recovery disks does not recreate a Hidden partition.

Please note....I only have experience with Acer XP recovery disks. Vista recovery disk might be differ, but most likely the same.

The recovery disks work fine without the recovery partition. I used them after I deleted the partiton to install XP and there were no problems.

I deleted the recovery partition as soon as I burnt my recovery disks (and made and ISO image of them) recovery disks work just fine without it.

Excellent... I'll go ahead and delete the EISA-partition then :)

AFTER I have talked to Acer to support about mailing me recovery discs: My dvd-drive refused to burn the two discs (wouldn't recognise the dvd-media). Tried recovery from within, but it just got stuck at job 5 of 6 or so and never installed the "eRecovery"-thing... just kept saying "please wait" for hours :-(

You don't need the recovery partition to make a recovery disk work. But on the other hand, it's just a very small partition (insignificant on today's hard drive sizes, really). Who knows, you might want to use it in future. Why not just leave it there? If you do insist on removing it, I would recommend making an image of it on CD so you can restore it in future. But no, you don't need it if you made a system recovery disk. That disk will boot up with everything it needs (as long as it works - you never know). Unless ACER has changed things recently, if you ever do a recovery like that, it will only install Windows on the C drive. It won't restore the original recovery partition.
