I've just bought a 5021wlmi from ebuyer and it will not detect a dial tone when i try to connect - the modem 'clicks' to dial and will dial if i uncheck the "Wait for dial tone" box

i've tried re-installing the modem, trying from a different phone line, installing the recovery disk, checked the cable. i've also used an external modem in the usb port which worked fine.

to make matters worse this is the second one with exactly the same problem, which leads me to believe it might be me. a friend did suggest that there may be a port problem as there is no list of Ports in the Device Manager.

Can anyone help as i dont want to send it back again and i leave for oz in 3 weeks which is not enough time to get it to Acer and back?

    many thanks

    Andy

Explain that please. Can you see the modem listed in Device Manager? There might be an updated driver on Acer's website. If you can find out who makes the modem, maybe they will have a better driver. If you can get it hooked up to the internet, Windows Update can sometimes fix things. Good Luck.

the modem is shown on the Device Manager but there is no list of Ports showing whats attached where. i understood that there should be but might be a red herring.

the modem is a SoftV.90 with SmartCP and there are drivers on the Acer Website and i have downloaded them but it didnt appear to make any difference although i will compare the two. i'm pretty sure it has a conexant chip-set.

    cheers

I can't help you but perhaps you can help me.

I have just bought a laptop also from ebuyer. I thought the return/warranty etc was to ebuyer not acer, but known ebuyer are terrible with customer service.

Do you have a choice of sending to ebuyer or acer

i've spoken to acer and they said i could send it to them so they can look at it.

you can also return to ebuyer for refund or replacement as (i) you get 7 (i think) days to cool-off with internet products and (ii) its not fit for purpose.

to be honest i've heard some bad reports about acers customer service too. ebuyer havent been too bad really - they had some delivery problems which slowed things down but the RMA number came quickly enough and one of the guys in customer service has been attentive if not very helpful.

i'm toying with the idea of just buying a cheap external modem as its the best price / spec i can find and maybe returning to acer when something else goes wrong!

Try using Windows Update or see if you can get a driver off conexant's website. Could be it is just broken.
