    Hello all,

I am planning to buy a laptop in week's time and finally decided Dell was too expensive for me. I found two models of acer aspire when looked for the shops around. A comparison feature showed me almost same features for both aspire 5733 and 5742. Both come with same processor, ram, hdd etc. I wanted to ask what's the difference? 5733 is priced 494 US$ and 5742 is 472 US$. Also which model would you people recommend ?

That has to be my most useless post ever, but I can see no difference between the two. For a moment it seemed like 5733 has no HDMI port but apparently it has that one too.
It's not like these are identical though- sometimes the same platform is sold with different model numbers but it's easy to verify- those would have used exactly the same BIOS but they don't.
So really- I have no idea- especially that 5733 seems not to be very popular and it's hard to find some reliable info.

If I had to choose between the two I would have bought 5742- if I can't figure out where they had saved those $20 I'd rather buy the other one than find out the hard way. It may be just some normal price fluctuation and other retailers may have it the other way around.

Could be the speakers, some 5733 models have Stereo speakers while 5742 have mono speakers which are cleverly called by Acer "Built-in Speakers". Could be the different Touchpad like cheaper Elantech instead of Synaptics or different make of batteries with varying capacities.
These are only my assumptions and have no substantial proof for it.

Battery capacity is the same as far as I've been able to confirm it- the rest is entirely possible although the main difference is surely the mobo (it's the same yet different ;) )

    Thanks for the guidance folks.

Apparently reviews for 5742 are much better than for 5733
